Tacoma Rainiers News Release
FRESNO, Calif. - The Tacoma Rainiers (12-10) evened their series against the Fresno Grizzlies (15-8) with a 7-3 victory on Saturday night at Chukchansi Park.
Center fielder Ian Miller led the offense with three RBI on a 2-for-5 performance, while third baseman Taylor Motter (2x5, R, 2B) also collected multiple hits.
After two scoreless frames to open the game, Tacoma got on the scoreboard with a 1-0 lead in the top of the third thanks to a Fresno fielding error. Miller added to the lead with a two-run single in the top of the fourth, pushing the Rainiers advantage out to 3-0.
Designated hitter Daniel Vogelbach, in his second game back with Tacoma, shot a solo home run out to right field in the top of the fifth to make Tacoma's lead 4-0. Fresno responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut Tacoma's lead to one run at 4-3.
Tacoma worked to expand their lead again with runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Miller collected an RBI single in the fifth and catcher Chris Herrmann laced an RBI triple to the gap in right center the following inning to make the Rainiers lead 6-3.
First baseman Cameron Perkins wrapped up the scoring with a solo home run in the top of the ninth. His second homer of the year gave Tacoma the final margin of 7-3.
Rainiers starting pitcher Ariel Miranda (1-0) earned his first win of the year with Tacoma after working 5.0 innings and allowing three runs on six hits. Miranda tossed 97 pitches (60 strikes) and struck out five while walking three.
Dario Alvarez relieved Miranda and worked 2.0 scoreless, hitless innings with a pair of strikeouts. Shawn Armstrong (2.0 IP) closed out the contest with two more perfect frames to earn his first save of the season.
Tacoma and Fresno wrap up their five-game series on Sunday at 12:05 p.m. PT. Rainiers right-hander Rob Whalen (3-0, 3.09) will get the start opposite Grizzlies righty Francis Martes (0-1, 6.91).
