Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
(Charleston, WV - June 29, 2015) - The West Virginia Power swept the Greensboro Grasshoppers with a rain-shortened, 3-2 victory on Monday night at Appalachian Power Park. The game was called just before the start of the seventh inning. The sweep by West Virginia was the first five-game sweep since the 2011 season when the Power swept Delmarva to end the year.
West Virginia scored the first run of the game in the first inning. After Cole Tucker led off the game by reaching on a two-base error, he advanced to third on a flyout and scored when Connor Joe hit a sac fly to center.
Greensboro tied the game in the third inning. With one out, John Norwood hit a double and scored moments later on an RBI single from Arturo Rodriguez.
The Power reclaimed the lead in the fifth inning. After Tito Polo singled with one out, he stole second and scored two batters later when Jordan Luplow crushed an opposite field two-run home run to give the Power a 3-1 lead.
In the sixth, the 'Hoppers came to within one with the rainfall in Charleston picked up in the seventh inning which forced the game into a delay. Following a 28-minute delay, the decision was made by the umpires, both managers, and members from the Power front office to end the game early due to the rain.
As a result of the rain-shortened victory, Jose Regalado (2-3) earned the win while Tyler Kolek (4-4) suffered the loss. Power starter Yeudy Garcia allowed seven hits over four innings and surrendered one run while striking out six.
Tucker finished the day 0-for-3 and saw his 12-game hit streak come to an end. The 18-year-old was scheduled to lead off the seventh inning but did not come up because of the rain.
The Power (5-0, 42-32) sweep the five-game series with the Grasshoppers (0-5, 29-45) and will battle the Kannapolis Intimidators for a four-game series at CMC-NorthEast Stadium in Kannapolis. West Virginia will send RHP Colten Brewer (2-4, 5.13) in the first game of the series and he will be opposed by Intimidators RHP Spencer Adams (3-4, 4.06). First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. while pregame on Charleston's ESPN Radio 104.5 and 1490, the TuneIn Radio App, and the Power website is slated for 6:45 p.m.
Saturday's game is the Fourth of July celebration at Appalachian Power Park. Fans who come out to the game can enjoy an extended version of the postgame fireworks show with a patriotic element.
