Hickory Crawdads News Release
Hickory, NC - The Hickory Crawdads erupted for a 5-run 1st inning Monday night and made the lead hold up for the rest of the night, as the 'Dads held on for a 5-4 win over the Lakewood BlueClaws at L.P. Frans Stadium.
The opening inning outburst was powered by a pair of home runs, as Carlos Arroyo went deep for the first time this year with a 2-run shot to right before All-Star Luke Tendler clubbed his 6th big fly for a 3-run long ball later in the frame to give the 'Dads a 5-0 lead. Lakewood clawed their way back into the game with single runs in the 3rd and 4th followed by 2 runs in the 6th to cut the score to 5-4, but the 'Dads bullpen duo of Shane McCain and Erik Swanson combined to toss 3.2 shutout innings to finish off the Crawdads win.
The big 1st inning for the 'Dads began with the first five batters reaching safely against BlueClaws starter Yoel Mecias, including a leadoff double from Michael De Leon, the 2-run homer by Arroyo, consecutive walks to Eduard Pinto and Jose Trevino, and finally the 3-run blast by Tendler. Following a fly out by Jairo Beras, Rock Shoulders would draw a walk and Juremi Profar singled to left before Lakewood brought in reliever Austin Davis who induced an inning ending double play to finally end the inning.
Hickory starting pitcher Collin Wiles (8-3) was the benefactor of all the early support, as the All-Star hurler went 5.1 innings while allowing 4 runs, 3 earned, on seven hits, one walk, and four strikeouts. McCain took the game over in the 6th and tossed 1.2 scoreless innings before Swanson (1) earned his first save of the year with two shutout frames. Mecias (0-2) took the loss for the 'Claws after allowing all five Hickory runs on four hits and three walks while recording only one out.
Arroyo was the only 'Dad to finish the night with a multi-hit game going 2-4 with his 2-run homer, while Tendler went 1-3 with his 3-run home run. Trevino reached base twice in the contest, going 1-3 with a walk and a run scored.
The Crawdads (46-27/2-3) will now welcome in the Greenville Drive for a 4-game series at L.P. Frans Stadium. Game one of the series is scheduled for 7:00 pm on Tuesday.
