
Crawdads Hold off Claws After 5-Run First Inning

HICKORY, NC - A five run Hickory first inning was enough for the Crawdads as they held off a BlueClaws rally, knocking off Lakewood 5-4 on Monday night at LP Frans Stadium.
The loss snaps a three-game Lakewood winning streak and drops them to 3-2/36-37 while Hickory, who won the first and last games of the five-game series, improves to 2-3/46-27.
Hickory scored five runs in the first inning, all off starter Yoel Mecias. After a lead-off double to Michael de Leon, Carlos Arroyo hit a two-run home run (1st), and three batters later, Luke Tendler hit a three-run home run, his sixth.
Trailing 5-0, the BlueClaws chipped away at the lead and got back into the game. They scored a run in the third inning on a groundout by Drew Stankiewicz and another in the fourth on a groundout by Jiandido Tromp. Then in the sixth, they scored twice, one on a SAC fly by Tromp and another on a groundout by Gustavo Martinez to pull within 5-4.
Hickory starter Collin Wiles (8-3) gave up four runs, two earned, over 5.2 innings of work. Shane McCain threw 1.2 innings of scoreless relief before turning it over to Erik Swanson, who got the last six outs for his first save.
Mecias (0-2) took the loss after allowing five runs in 1/3 of an inning. Austin Davis (4.2) and Calvin Rayburn (3) threw scoreless relief for Lakewood.
Cord Sandberg went 1-4 and extended his hitting streak to seven while Damek Tomscha added two htis for the BlueClaws and is now 16 for his last 42.
The BlueClaws head to Delmarva for a four-game series. LHP Josh Taylor (4-5) starts the series opener for Lakewood at 7:05 on Tuesday.
