Hagerstown Suns News Release
SALISBURY, MD - The Hagerstown Suns (2-3, 37-36) began the second half of the South Atlantic League season by taking two of five games in Salisbury, Maryland against the Delmarva Shorebirds (3-2, 36-37). The series concluded on Monday evening with the teams splitting a doubleheader. The five-game series is the longest series the Suns have played against an opponent this season, with three more five-game series' remaining on the schedule.
In the first game of the doubleheader on Monday evening the Suns put up six runs in the top of the fifth to take a commanding 9-0 advantage, and they cruised to a 9-3 win. Hagerstown sent 11 hitters to the plate in that six-run fifth inning, and came away with six hits, a walk, and a hit batsman. Starting RHP Austen Williams (7-1) limited the Shorebirds to two earned runs on four hits and two walks over six innings while striking out five to earn the win. Starting LHP Brian Gonzalez (4-5) got tagged with the loss for Delmarva. He pitched 4.1 innings, giving up seven earned runs on six hits and one walk while striking out four.
In the nightcap of the doubleheader on Monday DH Logan Uxa hit a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the seventh to give Delmarva a 7-3 victory and the series win. It was Uxa's second homerun of the season and it came with two outs in the frame. RHP Kevin Perez (0-1) gave up Uxa's long ball and thus he was charged with the loss. All four runs were unearned as that was the only hit Perez allowed in 1.2 innings of work. RHP Stefan Crichton (2-2) got the win in relief for the Shorebirds. He surrendered one earned run on four hits over three innings while striking out two.
In game three of the series on Sunday evening Hagerstown notched a dramatic come-from-behind 11-8 victory in 12 innings. The Suns were down to their final out in the top of the ninth when catcher Matt Reistetter smacked a three-run homerun over the right field wall to knot the game at 8-8. It was the first time this season the Suns have won a game when trailing after eight innings. LHP Jake Walsh (1-0) earned the win in relief for the Suns. In 2.2 scoreless frames he gave up two hits and one walk while striking out two. RHP Nigel Nootbaar (1-1) suffered the loss for Delmarva. He gave up all three 12th inning Suns runs in what was his only inning of work. Perez threw a scoreless bottom of the 12th for his first save of the season with Hagerstown. The two teams combined to use 11 pitchers in the game.
In game two of the series on Friday night the Shorebirds put up five runs in the first inning and never looked back, coasting to a 5-2 win. All five Delmarva runs were charged to starting LHP Matt Puke (1-3), who threw just 0.2 innings, allowing four hits and three walks while striking out one. It was the shortest outing by a Suns starting pitcher this season. Starting RHP Matthew Grimes (6-4) got the win for the Shorebirds. He went six innings, giving up one unearned run on five hits and two walks while striking out five. RHP Garrett Cortright earned his fifth save of the season by tossing the final 1.1 innings for Delmarva.
In the first game of the series on Thursday night Hagerstown scored seven runs in the top of the third to take a 7-0 advantage, but Delmarva answered right back with six runs in the bottom of the third inning, and the Shorebirds eventually went on to win 9-7. Neither starting pitcher lasted more than three innings, so it was Nootbaar who wound up getting the win in relief for Delmarva. He threw 1.1 scoreless frames while giving up just one hit. RHP Deion Williams (0-1) suffered the loss for Hagerstown in his Suns debut. In two innings pitched he was charged for two earned runs despite not allowing a hit, as he walked three batters and struck out four. Crichton pitched the final 2.2 innings for Delmarva without allowing a hit or a run to earn his third save of the season.
In total Delmarva and Hagerstown both scored 32 runs in the series, but the Suns outhit the Shorebirds 57-44. The Suns next head back home to Hagerstown to take on the Greensboro Grasshoppers (0-5, 29-45) in a four-game series beginning on Tuesday, June 30. The Suns will send RHP Drew Van Orden (4-1) to the mound for his ninth start and 14th appearance this season. First pitch on Tuesday is scheduled for 7:05pm.
