Lexington Legends News Release
Elier Hernandez' run-scoring single in the fifth inning broke a 5-5 tie, and the Lexington Legends went on to an 8-5 win over the Savannah Sand Gnats Monday night. The game was completed Monday after being suspended Sunday afternoon after four innings due to rain.
The Legends added their last two runs in the top of the ninth on a double by DonAndre Clark, a run-scoring single by Corey Toups, and a double by Ryan O'Hearn.
The Sand Gnats came back to win the regularly scheduled game 3-1.
The Legends took a 2-0 lead in the first inning Sunday. Toups drew a leadoff walk, stole second, went to third on a balk and scored on O'Hearn's sacrifice fly. Hernandez followed with his fifth home run of the year.
The Sand Gnats responded with two in the bottom of the first. Luis Guillorme and Wuilmer Becerra walked, and Guillorme advanced to third after Eudor Garcia flied out to center field. John Mora's infield hit scored Guillorme, and when pitcher Pedro Fernandez threw past first after fielding the ball hit by Mora, Becerra also scored to tie the game.
Savannah moved in front with a run in the second. Jean Rodriguez walked, stole second, continued to third on a throwing error by catcher Chase Vallot and scored on a single by Adrian Abreu.
The Legends took a 5-3 lead in the third on a three-run homer by O'Hearn, his league-leading 17th home run of the year, but Savannah came back with single runs in the third and fourth, leaving the score at 5-5 when the game was suspended.
Corey Ray (2-3) got the win in relief for the Legends. Paul Paez (2-2) took the loss.
In the seven-inning game that followed, the Sand Gnats scored all three of their runs in the second inning. Garcia reached on an error by O'Hearn at first base, and then scored on a double by Tomas Nido. Nido came home on a single by Mora. Mora was forced out at second by Vicente Lupo, but Adrian Abreu doubled, scoring Lupo.
The Legends scored their only run in the top of the seventh on a double by Samir Duenez, a single by Chad Johnson, and an error by Garcia at third base on a grounder hit by Toups.
Savannah starter Corey Oswalt (5-3) threw six shutout innings and got the win. Jimmy Duff pitched the seventh and picked up his seventh save.
Legends starter Colin Rodgers (1-6) was the losing pitcher.
The Legends won three out of four in the series. Their road trip continues with a four-game series in Rome. The series opener Tuesday night begins at 7 p.m.
