MOOSIC, Pa. - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders fell to the Louisville Bats 9-4 on Saturday night at PNC Field. The RailRiders pitching, playing on Backyard Baseball Night in Melonheads jerseys, allowed a season-high 20 hits in the loss.
Louisville jumped out to the lead in the top of the first inning against left-hander Josh Rogers. Gabby Guerrero and Phillip Ervin delivered RBI singles and came home to score on a two-run base-hit from Mason Williams to hand the Bats a quick 4-0 lead.
The RailRiders answered back in the bottom of the first when Clint Frazier walked and Tyler Wade doubled to set runners on second and third with no outs. A passed ball allowed Frazier to score, and a Billy McKinney single plated Wade to narrow the deficit to 4-2.
Rogers (5-5) danced in and out of trouble for the remainder of his start, yielding another run in the top of the fifth courtesy of a Blake Trahan RBI single. The Indiana native allowed five runs on 13 hits in 4.2 innings, walking two and striking out three.
In the bottom of the fifth, Wade connected for a solo home run against Brandon Finnegan (2-4) to get the RailRiders within 5-3. It was the first round-tripper of the season for Wade with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and his first overall since Aug. 26, 2017.
The Bats manufactured a run in the top of the seventh against Raynel Espinal as Williams walked, was sacrificed to second and scored on a Trahan single. A Gabby Guerrero solo home run against Brady Lail in the top of the eighth extended the Louisville advantage to 7-3, and the Bats added two final tallies in the ninth.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre touched up Zach Neal for a run in the bottom of the ninth, with Drury driving in Wade courtesy of a two-out double to close the gap to 9-4. However, Neal coaxed a game-ending flyout off the bat of Ryan McBroom to close the game.
Brandon Drury went 2-for-3 with two walks, a double and an RBI to extend his consecutive games reached base streak to 31 games. Drury's streak ties the RailRiders-era franchise record, set by Jake Cave in the 2017 season.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre completes its three-game series with Louisville on Sunday afternoon at PNC Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. RHP David Hale (1-2, 4.80) heads to the bump for the RailRiders, while LHP Cody Reed (2-5, 4.19) toes the rubber for the Bats.
