Gwinnett Stripers News Release
LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - The Gwinnett Stripers ended a seven-game losing streak with a rain-shortened 1-0 victory Saturday over the Syracuse Chiefs at Coolray Field.
The game was stopped in the bottom of the fifth inning with starting pitcher Matt Wisler at bat and Xavier Avery on second base following a leadoff double. A heavy storm system and lightning in the area caused umpires to officially end the game after a 1-hour, 2-minute delay.
Wisler (W, 2-3) was dominant on the mound, facing just one batter over the minimum in his 5.0 innings with four strikeouts. Jake Lowery was the only Chief to reach base via a third-inning single.
It was Wisler's second rain-shortened complete game effort this season, with the other coming on May 6 at Indianapolis when he tossed 5.0 one-run innings in a 4-1 win.
The lone run of the game came for the Stripers in the first inning. Dustin Peterson reached with a one-out walk, and Carlos Franco moved him to second with a single. Phil Gosselin drove Peterson home with a single up the middle for the 1-0 lead and the win.
Syracuse starter Phillips Valdez (L, 2-2) also went the distance in the loss, yielding a run on five hits and striking out one over 4.0 innings.
Of note, Rob Brantly's fourth-inning single extended his hitting streak to a season-best five games. He was one of five Stripers to notch a hit in the game.
Despite it being an official game, fans in attendance will still have their tickets honored at the Gwinnett Stripers Ticket Office for any game this season (excluding July 4).
The rubber game between the Stripers (25-34) and Chiefs (28-31) is Sunday at 1:05 p.m. at Coolray Field. Right-hander Lucas Sims (1-2, 1.45 ERA) is scheduled for Gwinnett against fellow righty Cesar Vargas (1-6, 5.43 ERA) for Syracuse. Tony Schiavone will have the play-by-play call on 97.7 and 93.5 FM The Other Side of the River beginning at 12:35 p.m.
