Columbus Clippers News Release
The Columbus Clippers bats came up big late tonight at Huntington Park, topping the Buffalo Bisons, 6-5, in game one of their three-game series.
The Clippers hopped out to an early lead when Francisco Mejia pushed a RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the second inning.
Ahead 1-0, Brandon Guyer, on a rehab assignment from Cleveland, blasted a solo homerun over the left field wall to extend the Clippers' lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the third.
He did it again in the bottom of the fifth, this time right down the left field line, to make it 3-0.
All the while, Clippers' starter Mitch Talbot tossed his best game of the season. He made it two outs into the seventh before being relieved by Jeff Beliveau, who escaped a jam with two on and two out.
Talbot went six and two-thirds scoreless innings, allowing five hits and one walk, while striking out five.
The Clippers added to their lead in the bottom of the seventh when Yu Chang coaxed a bases-loaded walk, making it 4-0.
Buffalo struck for the first time, pulling within 4-2, with two outs in the top of the eighth inning when Rowdy Tellez crushed a long double, scoring a pair of Bisons against reliever Matt Belisle.
Belisle came back to toss the ninth, but the Bisons were able to get to him again, tying the ballgame at 4-4.
George Kontos relived Belisle and allowed the go-ahead run to Lourdes Gurriel Jr. on a single to left.
Down 5-4, Yandy Diaz came up clutch for the Clippers, cranking a leadoff solo shot high over the wall in right, tying the game at 5-5. Mejia then delivered a double to centerfield to put himself in scoring position for Drew Maggi. Maggi stroked a single to left, scoring Mejia for the 6-5 walk off win.
The Clippers will host the Bisons in game two of their three-game series tomorrow at Huntington Park, with first pitch scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
