Toledo Mud Hens News Release
TOLEDO, Ohio- The first place Toledo Mud Hens dropped game two of a three game series against the Norfolk Tides 7-2 in front of a sellout crowd on Veterans Appreciation night at Fifth Third Field.
Chad Huffman collected two hits and scored a run as Toledo (37-23) fell to Norfolk (33-36) for the second straight night. It took the Hens awhile to get going offensively, as they showed a three in the hit column through six innings of play. By the end of the night that same column read eight.
Toledo starter A.J. Ladwig ran into some troubles early, allowing a homer to Cedric Mullins on the first pitch of the game. Ladwig settled in after that to retire the next six batters before the Tides would score again in the third inning. By the time his day was done, he had given up six runs.
The Mud Hens called on Caleb Thielbar to take over for Ladwig in the sixth inning. He started out very well by throwing two scoreless innings. However, in his third inning of work the Tides attack got to him for a run. Zac Houston came out in the ninth inning, and struck out the first two hitters before hitting Mullins with a pitch. That was all for not, however, as Steve Wilkerson grounded out to Edwin Espinal.
Tides starter Jimmy Yacabonis went five innings, surrendering only three hits, while striking out three and walking one. The only real trouble he got into came in the third inning when Mike Gerber nailed a double and Pete Kozma tried to score from first base. The team of Mike Yastrzemski and Steve Wilkerson wound up gunning down the would-be scorer.
It was not until the seventh inning when the Hens found the scoreboard. Back to back singles from Jim Adduci and Huffman, off of Joely Rodriguez, put the first place team in striking distance with no outs. A groundout by Jason Krizan gave Edwin Espinal a chance with two runners in scoring position. He knocked in one run with a single. The second run came around when Huffman scored on a wild pitch.
Despite an extremely hard hit two out single by Christin Stewart, the Hens attack was turned away. Huffman led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a single to put Toledo in business. A walk from Jason Krizan brought Edwin Espinal to the plate with a chance to do some damage. Though, Espinal grounded into a double play. With two outs and a runner on third, Jarrod Saltalamacchia strode to the plate, and flew out to first base. The Hens dropped their second straight game to the Tides.
What's Next:
The Mud Hens will conclude the series against the Norfolk Tides on Sunday at 4:05 PM. Following that game they will take to the road for a four game series against the Indianapolis Indians.
