SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders topped the Syracuse Chiefs 9-7 in 11 innings at NBT Bank Stadium on Saturday night. After building a 6-0 advantage, the RailRiders scored twice in the 11th to secure the series win with one game to go Sunday while sending the Chiefs to their eighth straight loss.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre scored three runs on four hits in each of the first two innings. In the first, Clint Frazier walked and Tyler Wade singled off Syracuse starter Logan Darnell. Brandon Drury singled in Frazier for a 1-0 edge. Billy McKinney singled in Wade and Abiatal Avelino drove in Drury with a base hit for a 3-0 advantage.
In the second with two down, Fraizer and Wade each singled. Drury singled home Frazier again for a 4-0 lead and Ryan McBroom followed with a two-run double to extend the lead to 6-0.
RailRiders starter David Hale worked four and two-thirds no-hit innings to start. The right-hander saw one batter reach on an error in the first inning and hit Irving Falu to start the fourth. Chris Dominguez broke up the no-hitter with a single in the fifth.
The Chiefs broke up Hale's shutout bid in the sixth inning when Jose Marmolejos singled in Andrew Stevenson with no one out. Syracuse added a run on an error and a third on a two-out base hit by Yadiel Hernandez to cut the lead to 6-3.
Syracuse plated a run on three walks and a sac fly in the seventh, cutting the lead to 6-4. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre added an insurance run in the top of the eighth as Drury singled in L.J. Mazzilli, putting the RailRiders in front 7-4.
The Chiefs, however, evened the game against Cody Carroll in the bottom of the eighth. With the bases loaded, Andrew Stevenson was hit by a pitch. Irving Falu singled in a pair to tie the game at seven.
After a scoreless ninth and tenth, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre regained the lead in the 11th. Wade tripled in Bruce Caldwell for an 8-7 lead and scored on a McBroom sacrifice fly to extend the advantage.
Hale pitched five and two-thirds with one walk and one strikeout while Darnell allowed six runs on nine hits over five innings in his Syracuse debut. Carroll was charged with a blown save, his second of the year.
Raynel Espinal (3-1) pitched three innings, striking out five for the win. Carlos Torres (1-1) took the loss after allowing the final two runs over two innings of work.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Syracuse close this series on Sunday afternoon. Nestor Cortes (0-3, 5.19) will start for the RailRiders against the Chiefs and Tommy Milone (3-4, 5.14) with the first pitch scheduled for 1:05 p.m. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre will be back at PNC field on Tuesday, June 19, to take on the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.
