Right-hander Jose Berrios took the hill against the red-hot RailRiders. The RailRiders came into Frontier Field today after winning five straight. In top of the first, Berrios was able to retire the side and leave a runner stranded at first, thanks in part to the speed of Byron Buxton, who ran down two, long fly balls in center field.
Right-hander Brady Lail got the start for Scranton, looking for his second road win with the RailRiders. Lail sat the Wings one-two-three in the bottom of the first inning.
After a quick top inning for Berrios and the Wings, Doug Bernier recorded the first hit of the night with a two-out single through the right side in the bottom of the third. A ground-out by Buxton ended the inning and left the game scoreless through three.
Yet another one-two-three inning for Berrios in the top of the fourth, followed by a one-two-three inning by Lail in the bottom.
A fly out to Xavier Avery to end the top of the fifth inning marked Berrios' 14 straight batter retired in tonight's game. The last RailRider who reached base was Rob Refsnyder when he was hit by a pitch in the top of the first inning.
In the bottom of the fifth, Jose Martinez reached on a single up the middle with two outs. Eric Fryer's pop fly to right field after a nine-pitch at bat ended the inning and stranded Martinez at first. The game still scoreless heading into the sixth inning.
Six innings in and no stir in the bullpen because 21-year-old Berrios had yet to allow a hit to a RailRider. He struck out the RailRiders in order in the top of the sixth inning.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Bernier drew a leadoff walk from Lail, his first of the game. Buxton followed up with an infield base hit, putting runners on first and second for James Beresford. Beresford executed a sacrifice fly to put Bernier and Buxton in scoring position for Reynaldo Rodriguez. Rodriguez got a run on the board for the Wings with a ground ball to the shortstop. Kennys Vargas came to the plate with two outs and lined a base hit to center to score Buxton from second. That did it for Lail, as he was relieved by James Pazos. Pazos struck out Avery to end the sixth. The Wings led 2-0 heading into the seventh.
Lail's line: 5 2/3 innings, four hits, two earned runs, one walk and three strike outs. He threw 99 pitches, 63 for strikes.
The first hit of the game for Scranton was a long home run to left field off the bat of Rob Refsnyder, cutting the Wings lead 2-1. This was Refsnyder's ninth home run of the season and the fourth given up by Berrios. With runners on first and third and no outs, Berrios gave up the second home run of the inning to 6-foot-7 Aaron Judge. Scranton tacked on another run after a series of base hits and that ended the night for Berrios. Adrian Salcedo relieved Berrios, making his Triple-A debut. Salcedo forced a pop fly, struck out one, and Fryer caught Cole Figueroa stealing third to end the inning.
Berrios pitched six innings plus seven batters faced in the seventh inning. He allowed six hits, five runs (four earned) and did not walk a batter. Berrios struck out eight and threw 90 pitches, 63 for strikes.
The Wings picked up a run in the eighth inning against Andrew Bailey, when Avery knocked in Rodriguez.
Salcedo, just up from Double-A Chattanooga, pitched two relief innings with three strikeouts. Aaron Thompson worked the ninth for the Wings.
Buxton's hit extended his hitting streak to nine games.
