Syracuse Mets News Release
Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Chiefs beat the Buffalo Bisons, 8-2, en route to a season-high 11th straight win on Friday night. Chiefs starter A.J. Cole went six innings allowing only one earned run while striking out two. Kevin Keyes hit his sixth home run of the season on a three-run home run in the Chiefs' win. Every Chief batter recorded a hit and five players reached base multiple times.
Buffalo (62-59) struck first at NBT Bank Stadium, scoring in the top of the fourth. With one out, Matt Hague lined a solo home run to right-center field to give the Bisons an early 1-0 lead.
Syracuse (54-67) responded immediately in the bottom of the fourth with force. Jason Martinson and Matt Skole led off the inning with back-to-back singles off Buffalo starter Scott Copeland. With runners on first and second, Keyes blasted a three-run home run to center to make the score 3-1. Matt den Dekker followed Keyes with a double to center and then advanced to third when Caleb Ramsey hit a single in the next at-bat. Josh Johnson plated another run with a sacrifice fly to left field that scored den Dekker. Steve Lerud continued the rally in the next at-bat with a double to right field that scored Ramsey to make the score 5-1. Darin Mastroianni was the next batter and singled in Lerud and advanced to second on the play. Trea Turner then grounded out for the second out of the inning, but was able to advance Mastroianni to third. Martinson was the next batter for his second plate appearance and promptly lined a double to center that scored Mastroianni to increase the score to 7-1. After reliever Bobby Korecky replaced Copeland, Matt Skole doubled to center, scoring Mastroianni and capping the Chiefs' rally at 8-1.
The win moved Syracuse within one game of tying the Chiefs' all-time franchise record. In 1979, the Chiefs won 12 straight games, a record that has not been matched in the 36 years since. Syracuse currently owns the longest winning streak and losing streak in the International League this year.
The Chiefs and Bisons play game two of a three-game series Saturday evening with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Taylor Hill will get the start for Syracuse opposite Buffalo right-hander Chad Jenkins.
