Toledo Mud Hens News Release

The Toledo Mud Hens (49-70) rolled past the Charlotte Knights (63-58) at Fifth Third Field Friday night, with 6-1 decision in favor of the Hens. Toledo improves their record against the Knights this season to 3-4. Hens' starter Tim Melville kept Charlotte on their heels by recording eight strikeouts after 5.2 hitless innings.

Offensively, Mike Hessman and Alexi Casilla were the catalysts for Toledo, each capitalizing at the plate. Hessman, the minor league home run king, went 2-for-4 on the evening, recording his fourth triple of the season. Casilla, with the third highest batting average on the Hens' roster, extended his hit-streak to four straight games. Casilla went 2-for-3 against Charlotte, producing two RBI thanks to a double to left field.

Toledo's relievers Angel Nesbitt and Guido Knudson combined for three strikeouts, leaving the Hens at 11 total strikeouts on the evening. Knudson is currently tied for the most saves on the Hens roster at six. Since the all-star break, Knudson pitched in nine games, earning a save in six of those nine games.

Toledo posted runs right out the gate, and it all began with Hessman's RBI triple off the left field wall in the first. An inning later, Casilla recorded a line drive double, bringing home Jeff McVaney and Corey Jones.

With two outs in the fifth inning, McVaney was called out on a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Marc Krauss, solidifying the Hens victory. The Mud Hens defense was able to leave Charlotte with five straight scoreless innings.

The Mud Hens are back at Fifth Third Field tomorrow night in game two against Charlotte. Mike Belfiore is slated to make the start for Toledo, with first pitch set for 7 pm. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
