Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The RailRiders finished off a four-game sweep of the Pawtucket Red Sox with a 3-2 finish on Thursday night at PNC Field. The PawSox (44-75) have lost 11 straight. SWB stands 16 games above .500 for the first time since the then-SWB Yankees won the division in 2012 at 84-60.
HOME COOKIN': The RailRiders climbed back to .500 (31-31) at home with their season-high-tying fifth straight home win. SWB has not had a winning record at PNC Field since it started the season with an April 9 win versus Syracuse. The RailRiders have gone 10-2 at PNC Field since the All-Star break.
WITH CONVICTION: Aaron Judge drove in a pair of first-inning runs, walked and stole a bag. He leads the Yankees' farm in overall home runs while the next three spots are all occupied by man with SWB time in 2015: 2. Gary Sanchez (16); 3. Kyle Roller (13); T-4. Greg Bird (12). Judge also paces the farm with 65 RBIs. Nine of his last 16 hits have gone for extra bases including four home runs. His five stolen bases in 38 Triple-A games trump the two he had in 194 pro games before his SWB stay.
THERE'S THAT MAN AGAIN: Ben Gamel went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and stretched the IL's longest active hitting streak to 12 games (21-for-49, .429/.472/.776/1.247). He leads the IL with 12 outfield assists and co-paces all of MiLB with 14 triples, two shy of the single-season franchise record set by Shane Victorino in his 2005 IL MVP season. Gamel has posted multiple hits in 12 of his last 19 games, hitting .413/.471/.760/1.231 in that time. He has lifted his overall contact clip to .304, good for fourth in the IL. He ranks among the IL's best in hits (3rd, 127), runs scored (T-2nd, 68), slugging (3rd, .481), extra-base hits (T-4th, 42) and total bases (3rd, 201).
ONE-SIDED RELATIONSHIP: The RailRiders have more wins against Pawtucket (13-3) than any other team this season, including a 5-0 mark in the Ocean State. They have taken eight straight and 19 of 22 going back to last season. SWB finished the 2015 regular season 8-3 against Pawtucket at PNC Field.
NAILBITERS: Over half (12) of the RailRiders' last 23 games have been decided by one run and 16 have come down to two runs or less. SWB has gone 17-6 over that longer span and owns the IL's best record in one-run games at 24-14 (.632).
MIGRATING NORTH: Greg Bird went 0-for-5 in his MLB debut last night. He started at first base and batted seventh in the Yankees' 8-6 win at Cleveland. The reigning IL Batter of the Week (Aug. 3-9) left SWB with hits in 12 of 13, slashing .370/.379/.630/1.009 in that time to lift his Triple-A batting average to .301. The 22-year-old played in just 34 Triple-A games after his Fourth of July debut.
SENOR SWING: Gary Sanchez doubled and lined out on a 1-for-4 night. After starting his Triple-A time 2-for-11 (.182/.286/.455/.740), he has gone 26-for-75 (.347/.412/.560/.972). He has hit .326 at Triple-A with 21 RBIs in 24 games.
UNDER MY PIRELA: Jose Pirela drove in the winning run with an eighth-inning single in his first game this season as the SWB three-hole hitter. Since the All-Star break, he has hit .378/.447/.480/.927 while lifting his batting average to .339. If he had enough plate appearances to qualify (min. 2.7/team game), he would trail only Buffalo's Matt Hague (.344) in the batting title chase.
OFF THE RAILS: Kyle Roller hit ninth for the first time and went 0-for-3 with a strikeout...Since the break, the IL All-Star has gone 5-for-54 (.093) with seven walks (.231 OBP) against 22 strikeouts...He is hitless over his last 18 at-bats with 11 strikeouts...Eric Wooten (2-3) got the win with 5.2 innings of scoreless, four-hit relief (all singles)...James Pazos posted his second save by striking out the lone man he faced (Carlos Rivero)...Pazos has more strikeouts (29) than hits allowed (20) over his 27 innings.
