Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Allentown, PA) - After Pawtucket lost a three-run lead in the ninth inning, Jonathan Roof drilled a go-ahead RBI double in the top of the tenth and newcomer Jorge Marban made it hold up with a scoreless bottom of the frame as the PawSox snapped an 11-game losing skid by defeating the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, 7-6, on Friday night at Coca-Cola Park in the opener of a four-game series.
Pawtucket starter Zeke Spruill tossed eight terrific innings while Humberto Quintero and Sandy Leon each homered. Leon's three-run blast in the top of the ninth put the PawSox in front 6-2, but Lehigh Valley scored four times in the home half of the inning to tie the score and extend the contest.
In the decisive tenth, Garin Cecchini led off against losing pitcher Seth Rosin (4-2) with a bloop single to left. After Quintero sacrificed Cecchini to second, Roof blasted a double over the head of centerfielder Jordan Danks to bring home the winning run.
Marban (1-0), who stranded the winning run on base in the ninth, then pitched around a leadoff walk to Tyler Pastornicky in the bottom of the tenth to finish the victory. After Brian Bogusevic struck out looking for the first out, Aaron Altherr bounced into a double play that completed Pawtucket's first victory since August 2nd.
Spruill allowed just five hits and two runs in his season-high eight frames of work. He did not walk a batter and struck out a season-best eight in an outing where at one point the right-hander retired 12 batters in a row. He allowed a solo home run to Kelly Dugan (1) in the bottom of the second that tied the score at 1, but then did not allow another tally until the bottom of the eighth and left with a 6-2 lead.
But reliever Noe Ramirez entered to pitch the bottom of the ninth and allowed four runs while recording just one out. Tommy Joseph's RBI double made the score 6-4 and left runners on second and third, then Danks lined a game-tying two-run single just over the glove of the leaping shortstop Deven Marrero.
Quintero hit a solo shot against IronPigs starter Alec Asher that put Pawtucket in front 2-1 in the top of the fourth. Quintero had opened the scoring with an RBI single in the second. He went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Leon was 3-for-5 with three RBI.
Marrero went 3-for-5 with a walk and Carlos Rivero was 3-for-5 with two runs scored. The PawSox collected 15 hits compared to just eight for Lehigh Valley.
The teams will play a day-night doubleheader on Saturday, two nine-inning games that begin at 12:05pm and then at 6:35pm. Right-hander Matt Barnes (1-1, 4.17) will get the start for Pawtucket in the opener while Lehigh Valley counters with righty Jared Eickhoff (2-0, 0.64). Radio coverage on 920 AM (WHJJ) and also streaming online begins at 11:50 am.
