Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, Ind. - The Gary SouthShore RailCats saw another winning streak come to an end at the hands of the Sioux Falls Pheasants following a 5-2 loss in the first of a four-game homestand at U. S. Steel Yard over the Fourth of July Holiday Weekend.
The Pheasants (22-26) ended the RailCats (28-20) five-game winning streak jumping on top the home team with two first inning runs off starter Alain Quijano (1-1, 3.63) and never looked back. In the contest, Quijano threw six innings and allowed five runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out two for the âCats. Shortstop Kyle Haines contributed a pair of hits including an RBI double in the ninth as the âCats mustered just four hits all night.
The RailCats offense threatened in the seventh and had the tying run at the plate in the ninth before Sioux Falls reliever Aaron Cotter closed out any hopes of a comeback striking out Mike Rohde with runners on second and third. Pheasants' starter Kyle Ruwe improved to 2-3 on the year and earned a bit of redemption bouncing back from allowing eight runs to the RailCats on June 26 with an impressive performance Saturday. In his six innings of work, the crafty righty held a red-hot RailCats offense to just two hits and one run to earn the victory.
The first two outs came quickly for the âCats in the first inning, but it was that third one that proved to be tricky for Quijano and the RailCats. A pair of two-out walks led to a pair of RBI for Brandon Sing as he doubled to give the Pheasants a 2-0 lead early.
Sioux Falls added a single tally in the fourth, fifth and sixth to take a five run lead. A sacrifice fly by Reggie Abercrombie drove in Sing in the fourth, a Gus Milner RBI single scored Joe Anthonsen from third in the fifth and a solo home-run by Sing in the sixth completed the scoring for the visitors.
Looking for yet another come-from-behind victory at U. S. Steel Yard, the RailCats began clawing away at the Pheasants lead in the seventh when Cristian Guerrero scored when Haines grounded into a double-play with runners on first and third. Haines' RBI double in the ninth after a Boyer single and Guerrero walk cut the advantage to 5-2 but that's where the score remained after the final out of the game.
The RailCats look to even the series as Manager Greg Tagert will send LHP Carlos Rivas (1-0, 1.80) to the mound Sunday afternoon to take on the Pheasants RHP Adam Cowart (4-1, 3.55) for a 2:10 schedule first pitch on Medieval Day. Be one of the first 500 kids to enter the Castle Steel Yard Sunday and take home a RailCats inflatable bat!
