St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN - It was an odd night on Friday evening at Midway Stadium as the St. Paul Saints and Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks sat through a two hour and two minute rain delay, just finished the game before curfew, but in the end the Saints completed a four game sweep with a 7-1 victory in front of 7,882.
In the third inning with rain imminent the RedHawks got on the board with an RBI double from Nic Jackson. Just as the play finished the downpour began and the tarp came on the field. After a two hour and two minute rain delay the game continued.
After the rain delay both starters continued and in the bottom of the third Jonathan Van Every tied the game for the Saints with a solo homer to left, his 10th of the season.
RedHawks starter Jake Laber entered the game with the league's best ERA at 1.74, but the Saints roughed him up in the sixth. With the Saints up 2-1 Justin Snyder led off with a double and scored when Ole Sheldon hit a grounder to short that Zach Penprase threw away. Jason Cooper followed with an RBI double scoring Sheldon to make it 4-1. With one out Richard Mercado knocked home Cooper with a single giving the Saints a 5-1 lead. Ronnie Bourquin doubled him to third and that was all for Laber. He would go 5.1 innings allowing seven runs (four earned) on eight hits. Chad Rhoades came on in relief and a passed ball scored Mercado and Jake Krause's sac fly finished the scoring.
Saints starter Edwin Walker, who allowed that RBI double to Jackson just before the rain, was magnificent after. He didn't allow another hit and went 6.0 innings allowing the one run on two hits while walking four and striking out four.
The four game sweep by the Saints was their first four game sweep since they did it July 27-30 against the Sioux Falls Canaries. The Saints outscored the RedHawks 35-9 in the four game series.
The Saints now head to Shaw Park to take on the Winnipeg Goldeyes in a four game series that begins Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. The Saints send RHP Jake Schmidt (5-1, 3.78) to the mound. The game can be heard live on Relevant Radio 1330.
