Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
SHREVEPORT, La.---For the second straight night on Fourth of July weekend, the Captains beat Amarillo 6-5 in their last at bat. Bryan Sabatella's RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the tenth scored Alex Cowart with the winning run, sending the 3,730 assembled into a frenzy prior to the holiday fireworks display in center field.
Palmer Karr Jr. had sent the game to extras by hitting a two-out, two-strike three-run homer to left field to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth off Amarillo reliever Corey Bass.
Trailing 5-2 in the ninth, Bass walked Mike Provencher and then got Robert Perry to hit into a fielder's choice. He then walked Sabatella and got Andres Rodriguez to hit into a fielder's choice putting runners on the corners with two outs and setting the scene for Karr's blast, which came just one night after his RBI single gave the Captains a 6-5 win with five runs in the bottom of the ninth.
After Captains closer Dan Griffin (W, 3-1) pitched a 1-2-3 top of the tenth, Joe Urtuzuastegui singled off Sox reliever Gary Perinar (L, 0-2) to lead off the inning. Brian Peterson sacrifice bunted back to Perinar to put Urtuzuastegui at second, where he was lifted for pinch runner Michael Diffie. Cowart singled to center and Captains manager Vince Moore sent Diffie to the plate, but he was thrown out by Sox center fielder Fehlandt Lentini.
But the Captains kept the inning alive with Provencher and Perry drawing walks. Sabatella then hit the game-winning single to center off the Sox fourth pitcher of the night, Austin Chambliss. Chambliss was on the mound last night when Karr Jr. hit the game-winning single.
Trailing 1-0 in the third, Amarillo took a three-run lead with four in the top of the frame and sending ten batters to the plate. Matthew Tucker scored Kevin Butler to start things off with a base hit. Lee Cruz would knock in Lentini and Butler with a two-run double. Later in the inning, Cruz would score on a Tim Alberts single off Captains starter Aaron Cunningham. Yet Cunningham would get the big out when he needed it most, striking out Kevin Butler with the bases loaded to end the inning.
Cyle Hankerd would extend the lead with a lead-off fifth inning home run off Cunningham, his fifth of the season. Cunningham lasted seven innings, allowing five runs on ten hits while striking out a season-high six and walking three.
Amarillo starter Ryan Mitchell went eight innings, allowing just two runs on four hits, walking five and striking out four. Amarillo's bullpen allowed four runs on four hits in 1.2 innings. Captains reliever Mark Haynes and Griffin pitched three scoreless innings in relief of Cunningham.
Urtuzuastegui, Cowart, and Sabatella each had 2-for-4 nights for the Captains. Karr Jr. went 1-for-4 with three RBIs. In the losing effort, Amarillo's Cruz was 2-for-5 with a run scored and two RBIs. Lentini went 2-for-6 with a run scored, a stolen base and one caught stealing.
Shreveport-Bossier improved to 9-4 in one run games and 2-1 in extra innings. The Captains and Sox open up a three-game series in Amarillo Sunday, July 3 at National Bank Sox Stadium. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
