St. Paul Saints News Release

WINNIPEG, MB - Perhaps it was the long game the night before or the three hours spent at the border, but whatever the case the St. Paul Saints were beat up in the first game of a four game series to the Winnipeg Goldeyes 11-3 on Saturday evening at Shaw Park.

The Saints took their only lead of the night in the second inning when Richard Mercado reached on an error with two outs and Ronnie Bourquin singled him to second. Alex Garabedian then bounced one up the middle to score Mercado and give the Saints a 1-0 lead.

The lead was short lived as the Goldeyes tied it in the bottom of the inning as Jon Weber singled with one out and moved to third on a single by Luis Alen. Justin Bass' sacrifiice fly tied it at one.

The flood gates opened in the third as the Goldeyes sent eight men to the plate and scored five runs. With one out Price Kendall reached on a fielding error by third baseman Bourquin. Kendall stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Kody Kaiser then walked and he stole second. Wes Long roped a 3-0 pitch for a double into right-center scoring both runners and giving the Goldeyes a 3-1 lead. Brian Myrow followed with an intentional walk and Weber singled home Long to make it 4-1. Luis Alen plated the final two runs with a single to left making it 6-1.

In the fourth Brian Joynt hit a solo homer to left, his fifth of the season, to make it 7-2.

Jonathan Van Every provided a bright spot for the Saints in the fifth as he led off the inning with a solo homer to right, his 11th of the season and second in as many games which extended his hitting streak to nine, to make it 7-2, but Goldeyes came right back and put up a four spot.

In the sixth the Goldeyes sent nine men to the plate and it started with a Justin Bass solo homer to left, his ninth of the season, to make it 8-2. Kendall would add an RBI single, Kaiser a sacrifice fly and Myrow an RBI single extending the lead to 11-2.

The two teams are now tied for first place with three games remaining in the series. Game two of the four game series is Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. The Saints start RHP Matt Long (5-3, 4.70) and the Goldeyes counter with LHP Isaac Hess (3-0, 3.82). The game can be heard live on Relevant Radio 1330.
