Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita starting pitcher Jon Link was dominant in a complete game and John Rodriguez was 3-for-3 with three RBI as the Wingnuts topped the RailCats 8-2 in Monday night's series opener. Gary (14-14) is in third place in the Central and slipped to five games behind first-place Wichita.
Wichita took the lead in the second inning against RailCats starter Will Krout. Cole Armstrong and Abel Nieves started the inning with back-to-back singles. After a fielder's choice, Jared McDonald grounded out to score Armstrong. Ryan Khoury lined a two-out RBI single to right to give the Wingnuts a 2-0 advantage.
Rodriguez led off the third inning with a solo homer to dead center, his sixth of the year, to make it 3-0.
Link held the RailCats scoreless on two hits through the first five innings. He retired 11 batters in a row after Adam Klein's leadoff single in the first and extended his scoreless inning streak to 24 before Gary broke through in the sixth. Chase Tucker started the sixth with a single and Klein walked. Ryan Babineau drew a two-out walk to load the bases for Danny Pulfer, who blooped a two-run single to right to pull the RailCats to within 3-2.
The Wingnuts blew the game open in the seventh inning. With two on and one out, Rodriguez delivered a two-run double down the left field line. After a walk to CJ Ziegler, Krout left the game with an apparent injury. Kyle Lindquist came on in relief and his first pitch to Brent Clevelen left the ballpark for a three-run home run to extend the lead to 8-2.
It was the first career complete game for Link (6-1) who has won five straight starts and limited the RailCats to five hits while striking out a season-high nine batters. Krout (1-4) was charged for seven runs on 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings.
The RailCats and Wingnuts will play a scheduled day-night doubleheader on Tuesday, with game one at 11:05 a.m. and game two at 7:05 p.m. The radio broadcasts of both games can be heard on 89.1 FM The Lakeshore and www.railcatsbaseball.com.
