Amarillo ThunderHeads News Release
AMARILLO, TX - The Sox scored half their runs in the fifth inning during their route of El Paso, 14-3 at Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium. A crowd of 1,414 saw Amarillo notch win number seven in a row, remaining a game back of first place in the south division. The game lasted two hours and forty nine minutes.
Ryan Mitchell started for Amarillo while Luis Chirinos started for the Diablos. Both pitchers would only go into the fifth, each earning a decision. The Sox got on the board in the second with a Trey Ford single that drove in Joe Weik, who doubled to get on base. But in the top of the third, El Paso took a 2-1 lead when Omar Luna singled in Jose Garcia and Thomas McAlpine. The Diablos would increase their lead in the fifth as a run scored on a hit, two errors, and a stolen bag by Garcia. The two-run lead would diminish quickly for El Paso.
The Sox plated seven runs in the bottom of the fifth with singles from KC Serna, Chris Valencia, David Peralta, and Cory Patton. Diablo starter, Luis Chirinos would leave the game with one out and the bases loaded during the fifth. A double by Ford brought in the eighth run of the game for Amarillo in the same inning with RBIs going to Peralta, Patton, and Brandon Jones' sacrifice fly to left. The score after five innings was 8-3. A pair of singles and a walk successively from the top of the Amarillo order loaded the bases for Peralta. The Sox left fielder tripled in all three runners with a smash down the right field line. He would score when the next batter, Joe Weik flied out to left. The Sox' lead after six was 12-3.
Matt Larkins came in relief of Mitchell to throw just fourteen pitches through the sixth and seventh innings combined. After the seventh inning stretch, Amarillo hit Diablos' reliever, Derek Forbes for two runs on two hits and an error, with another RBI going to David Peralta; his fifth of the game. Chris Grossman also doubled in a run during the seventh. Larkins (S, 1) threw five pitches in the eighth and twelve in the ninth to record his first save of the season, going four innings while allowing no hits with one strikeout.
Ryan Mitchell (W, 3-2) went five innings, allowing three runs, two earned on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Luis Chirinos (L, 1-3) pitched four and a third and allowed four earned runs, six total on seven hits while walking two and striking out three. His reliever, Seth Lintz got the last two outs of the fifth and entire sixth inning to also allow six runs, four earned on six hits while walking a batter. Chandler Barnard pitched the eighth for El Paso, giving up no runs on one hit with a strikeout.
With the win, the Sox improve to 17-12, while the Diablos fall to 7-23 on the season. Tuesday, the Sox host the El Paso Diablos for the second of a three-game series. The game is set to begin at 7:05pm with the Aqua One Pre-Game Show at 6:55pm on Ustream via www.amarillosox.com. Game time is tentative and is subject to blackout.
