June 17, 2013 - American Association (AA)
Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts signed former Major League outfielder Brent Clevlen on Monday afternoon.
Clevlen returns to the Wingnuts after spending last year in the high minors of the Arizona Diamondbacks' farm system. The Austin, TX native opened 2012 in Double-A Mobile and hit .260 with 10 home runs and 39 RBI in 67 games played. Clevlen then hit .377 over 31 contests after a late-season promotion to Triple-A Reno. Clevlen added three homers and 17 RBI in Reno, and helped the Aces win both the Pacific Coast League and Triple-A level championships.
Clevlen batted .310 with 15 doubles, 10 home runs, and 32 RBI in 46 games for the Wingnuts in 2011. On June 27th of that season versus El Paso, Clevlen hit the first inside-the-park home run in team history. Now 29-years-old, Clevlen had his contract purchased by the Philadelphia Phillies' organization in August of 2011 and went on to hit .336 with six homers and 20 RBI in 32 games for the Double-A Reading Phillies.
Clevlen was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the second round in 2002 out of Westwood High School in Austin. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound Clevlen first reached the Majors with Detroit in 2006 where he teamed with Winguts' manager Kevin Hooper and co-owner Nate Robertson. Clevlen spent parts of the next two seasons with the Tigers and also saw time with the Atlanta Braves in 2010. Clevlen split 54 games this year between Mobile and Reno.
Wichita also acquired right-handed pitcher Kyle Wahl from the United League's Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings. Wahl saved six games and did not allow a run in eight and two-thirds innings. The 24-year-old Wahl struck out 16 and walked four. Wahl pitched in the Minnesota Twins' farm system in 2011 for their rookie level Gulf Coast League affiliate before missing most of 2012 due to injury.
Clevlen and Wahl will be in uniform for tonight's game against the Gary SouthShore RailCats. Clevlen is in the starting lineup.
The Wingnuts placed right-handed pitcher Lincoln Holdzkom and outfielder Mike Mobbs on waivers.
Wichita and Gary SouthShore begin their series tonight at 7:05 p.m. Individual tickets can be purchased by calling (316) 755-SEAT, or by visiting www.selectaseat.com
Beginning this season, fans can use cash at all points of sale in Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Debit and credit cards will still be accepted.
