Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, Ind. - David Cooper hit a go-ahead RBI single in the eighth inning to push the RailCats to a 5-4 win over the Saints on Thursday night at U. S. Steel Yard. The RailCats improved to 48-48 in front of a crowd of 4,810; including Michael Jackson's children Prince, Paris and Blanket and sister La Toya, who were on hand to honor the late King of Pop.
With the game tied at four in the eighth inning, Zac Mitchell reached on an error on Saints first baseman Ole Sheldon to lead it off. Trevor Willis sacrificed him to second and Chris Carrara reached on an infield hit to put runners on the corners. Cooper then slapped a single past the third baseman Ronnie Bourquin to score Mitchell and give the 'Cats the lead.
The Saints struck first off of RailCats starter Stephen Hiscock in the first inning. Three singles, including an RBI hit by Bourquin gave St. Paul a 1-0 lead. The RailCats countered in the second inning on an RBI triple to right field by Willis to tie the game at one. Bourquin hit another run-scoring single in the third to give the Saints a 2-1 edge.
Saints starter Robert Coe held onto that lead until the seventh inning. Carrara reached on a bunt single and stole second before Adam Klein drove him in with a two-out RBI single to right. After Coe was removed from the game, Mike Massaro reached on a bunt single and Brian Kolb was walked to load the bases for Ryan Babineau, who delivered a two-run single to put the RailCats ahead 4-2.
Hiscock left the game with one out in the eighth inning and a runner on base. Dexter Carter came on in relief and his first pitch was hit over the left field wall for a two-run homer by Willie Cabrera to tie the game at four.
Hiscock took a no-decision, allowing three runs, two earned on six hits in 7 1/3 innings. He walked two and struck out five in his 11th quality outing in his 18 starts. Carter (3-3) picked up the win while Marco Gonzalez pitched a scoreless ninth for his ninth save.
Coe surrendered three runs in 6 2/3 for a no-decision, while Billy Spottiswood (1-1) was hung with the loss for allowing the unearned run in the eighth.
The series finale will be on Friday night at 7:10. Jon Gulbransen (4-1, 3.47) will start for the RailCats and it will be the final Fireworks Friday of the year, with a spectacular post-game fireworks show.
