El Paso Diablos News Release
EL PASO, TX - Tim Johnsonmay not have been the manager in El Paso when the 2012 season began, but the Diablos ' performance since his arrival made Johnson this year's American AssociationManager of the Year. Johnson took over as Diablos Field Manager on June 8, and led the team close to playoff contention with a 41-34 record.
"TJ has done a remarkable job turning this season around. We look forward to an exciting 2013 season with him running things from day one," said Diablos Managing Partner & President, Matt LaBranche.
Johnson's emergence in El Paso marked his second managing stint in the American Association. The Grand Forks, ND native had previously managed the Lincoln Saltdogs from 2003-2008. Before that, Johnson enjoyed time in the major leagues as a player, coach and manager.
The Diablos skipper began his professional baseball career when the Los Angeles Dodgers signed him in 1967 as an undrafted free agent. From there, Johnson spent seven seasons in the majors with the Milwaukee Brewers (1973-78) and the Toronto Blue Jays (1978-79). In 1993, Johnson began his coaching career by taking a job with the Montreal Expos, which he held the next year, as well. Johnson then took the same position with the Boston Red Sox from 1995-1996 before gaining his first major league managerial job with Toronto in 1998. Johnson led the Blue Jays to an 88-74 record and third place in the AL East.
