December 30, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Prince Albert Raiders News Release
Prince Albert, Sask. - The Prince Albert Raiders (12-16-1-1) played in a high-scoring contest with the Red Deer Rebels (22-9-1-1) at the Art Hauser Centre, but fell to their Central Division opponents 8-6 on Wednesday night.
Vladislav Shilo picked up his first WHL goal then added two more to collect the hat trick in the loss. Sloan Stanick added a pair of goals as well. Ozzy Wiesblatt chipped in three assists, while Carson Latimer and Tyson Laventure also dished out two helpers.
The 14 combined goals are the most in a single WHL game during the 2021-22 season so far.
The Rebels opened the scoring 25 seconds into the game. Jace Weir's point shot was stopped by Cole Tisdale, but Blake Stevenson collected the rebound and tucked it in to make it 1-0. Seven minutes later, Ben King's shot from the high slot on the power play put Red Deer up 2-0.
With 35 seconds left in the opening period, Stanick cut the lead in half. He took a breakaway pass from Remy Aquilon, fought off a defender on his way to the net, and made a move to his forehand to beat Chase Wutzke for his 10th of the season, making it a 2-1 game after 20 minutes.
The Rebels responded with two goals in two minutes early in the second period. First, Kalan Lind found the loose puck in the slot and fired a quick shot that beat Tisdale. Then, a bouncing puck eluded a Raider defender in front which allowed Jhett Larson to make a quick move to his backhand to give the Rebels a 4-1 lead.
Hayden Pakkala got the Raiders back within two at the 7:45 mark of the second. Set up in front of Wutzke, he deflected Wiesblatt's shot from the left wing into the net on the power play for his fifth of the season.
However, Red Deer responded about two minutes later. Tisdale lost the puck in his equipment following a dump in by the Rebels. He stood up to reveal the puck underneath him, which Jace Isley was able to jab into the net. The goal ended Tisdale's night after making 14 saves in 30 minutes of action.
Late in the second, Shilo got on the board with his first WHL goal to bring the Raiders back within two. He took a pass in the slot from Laventure, brought the puck across the face of the goal to his backhand and tucked it past Wutzke with 3:48 to play in the second.
Stanick's second of the game brought the Raiders back within one 3:34 into the third. He took a pass in the left corner and skated along the goal line. He put his backhand shot over Wutzke's glove at the far post to make it 5-4 on his team-leading 11th goal of the year.
However, the Rebels responded with three goals in four minutes to take back control. Liam Keeler, Carter Anderson, and Stevenson all found the back of the net to beat Tikhon Chaika and put Red Deer up 8-4.
Shilo struck again with 2:39 remaining in the game. His centering pass went off Kyle Masters in front and past Wutzke for his second of the contest. Then 1:17 later, he completed his hat trick when he redirected Latimer's pass from the right wing to the slot to round out the scoring at 8-6 for Red Deer.
In relief, Chaika made 12 saves for the Raiders and picked up the loss on his record. Wutzke stopped 35 shots for the Rebels.
The Raiders head to Saskatoon tomorrow night to take on the Blades at SaskTel Centre. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. Head to The Rock & Iron Club House or Original Joe's to watch the game, or catch it on WHL Live on CHL TV.
The next Raiders' home game is in 2022 when the Raiders host the Edmonton Oil Kings on Sunday evening. Game time is 6 p.m. Tickets are available at the Raiders Office during working hours or any time at SaskTix.ca.
