SALT LAKE CITY - The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (3-3) jumped out to an early lead on Friday night and never took their foot off the gas in a 130-93 victory over the Salt Lake City Stars (3-4).
Trevelin Queen posted a career-high of 36 points on 15-of-22 shooting, including 5-of-12 from deep, to go along with six rebounds as he led the way for a Vipers team that saw all five starters score in double-digits and seven players reach the mark, overall.
Carsen Edwards, who led Salt Lake City in scoring entering Friday night's contest, paced the Stars with 26 points off the bench. Rayvonte Rice added nine points to go along with four rebounds and two steals for the Stars in his first game since returning from injury.
Zylan Cheatham and Jared Butler were on assignment from the Utah Jazz for Friday night's matchup. Cheatham tallied 11 points, 11 rebounds and two blocked shots, while Butler scored 14 points to go with seven assists for the Stars.
The Stars scored the first five points after halftime to cut the Vipers lead to 10, forcing a quick timeout by Rio Grande Valley. Following the timeout, the Vipers squashed the Stars momentum behind six quick points at the rim, including an emphatic alley-oop dunk by Queen.
Rio Grande Valley used active hands to force the Stars into a season-high 27 turnovers, which the Vipers converted into 51 points. Queen led the hometown squad with five steals and Usman Garuba notched four thefts of his own.
Salt Lake City will look to avenge Friday night's loss tomorrow night, as the two teams will meet for the second time in as many nights. The Stars and Vipers will tip at 6:30 p.m. from the Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg, Texas. The game will stream on NBAGLeague.com.
