Orlando Solar Bears News Release

Solar Bears Director of PR and Broadcasting Bob Mills had a chance to catch up with Solar Bears goaltender John Curry before today's game.

Q: You played a good portion of last season in Orlando, becoming a fan favorite. What are some of your fondest memories from last season?

A: The home games are all really memorable, especially the first one. We went into a shootout in front of a huge sell out crowd. I was very impressed with the fan base all season long. Even when we struggled, they were always at the Amway Center supporting us and cheering for us.

Q: Talk about your experience with Iowa in training camp and at the start of this season.

A: It was a good experience. I believe I have the skills to play at that level. I know that I had some injuries last season and I spent some time in Europe during my career, so I have to continue to work hard. The Minnesota organization has put confidence in me, and anytime that I have a chance to play at a high level it's a good experience.

Q: You have appeared in four games with the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL during your career. What was it like for you to play in the NHL?

A: It was amazing. Growing up, you want to play in the NHL, that is always the goal. It isn't a realistic goal for a lot of people, including me. When I got to college I saw how good the competition was, and I knew how hard I was going to have to work to make it there. That experience is something that I will never forget.

Q: You mention your college years. Your senior season you were the Hockey East Player of the Year and a Hobey Baker finalist. Talk about your experience at Boston University and how it helped you to prepare for the professional ranks.

A: Boston gave me my first test of big time hockey. They always had a great crowd. I didn't get a chance to play much my freshman season and was slotted as the third string goalie going into my sophomore year. I was fortunate that as I continued to work hard I was able to get a chance to play. It was amazing to play in front of such passionate fans, and that experience certainly helped to prepare me for playing in the pros.

Q: The Solar Bears have a pair of games against the Gwinnett Gladiators this weekend. What are you most looking forward to for these games?

A: I'm looking forward to seeing our team in a game, as opposed to in practice. It has been about eight months since I have had a chance to play in a game, so I am looking forward to getting back in the net. I'm excited to see game situations and see the crowds. Those are the type of things you can't replicate during the summer.
