Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Bowling Green, KY - Robby Price had two hits and figured into two key rallies for the Hot Rods (21-18, 62-47) on Thursday night, helping Bowling Green beat Fort Wayne (19-20, 49-59), 4-1. The victory secures the Hot Rods fifth straight home series victory and gives them a shot at a four-game sweep and a perfect 7-0 home stand in Friday night's series finale.
An odd game began with scoring in the bottom of the second inning for the Hot Rods. Steve Tinoco walked, taking third on a well-executed hit-and-run single from Price to put men at the corners. The next hitter, Mayo Acosta, bounced into a 6-4-3 double play to plate Tinoco for a 1-0 lead.
Fort Wayne answered right back in the top of the third. With runners at the corners, they executed a double steal to perfection to tie the game at 1-1 as Rico Noel scored from third base.
The Hot Rods re-took the lead with another bizarre play in the fifth. With the bases loaded, Kevin Kiermaier lined what appeared to be a single to left field. Acosta scored on the play, but Nick Schwaner was forced out at third base on a borderline call to take away the hit from Kiermaier. Without credit for the hit, Kiermaier still picked up the RBI to give the Hot Rods a 2-1 lead.
They added to that lead in the sixth with a pair of clutch base hits. With the starter Zach Cates (L; 3-7) still in the game, Tinoco drew a one-out walk. Price then knocked Cates out with a run-scoring double to the gap in right-center to lift the Hot Rods to a 3-1 lead. Reliever Deiber Sanchez came on, recorded the second out, but then gave up a run-scoring two-out triple to Nick Schwaner to cap the scoring at 4-1.
From there, Hot Rods pitching did the rest. Victor Mateo (W; 11-5) worked a scoreless seventh, his third scoreless inning in relief. He turned the ball over to Chris Rearick, who worked perfect eighth and ninth innings for his 17th save.
On a six-hit night, Price led the way with a 2-4 outing with a double, an RBI, and a run scored. Tinoco had two of the Hot Rods five walks, scoring each time he was on base. Schwaner had a good night as well with his fifth triple as part of a two-hit game.
The series and home stand now come to an end with Faith and Family Night presented by Liberty University and Christian Family Radio on Friday night. The evening features a pre-game concert with recording artist Adam Cunningham as well as faith testimonials from Hot Rods players. First pitch is at 7:05 PM. Pre-game activities will begin at 5:45 PM. For tickets, visit www.bghotrods.com.
LHP Braulio Lara (3-8, 4.87) takes the ball in the finale against Fort Wayne RHP Dennis O'Grady (1-0, 5.92). You can follow the broadcast with Tom Gauthier and Josh Weinstock beginning at 6:40 PM on 1340 AM WBGN and www.bghotrods.com.
