River Bandits use big inning to sink Kernels, 8-4

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Kernels scored two in the 1st inning, but Quad Cities quickly scored five runs in the 2nd inning and cruised to an 8-4 victory. The Kernels started the early scoring onslaught with two runs in the 1st inning. Rolando Gomez tripled Travis Witherspoon, and Gomez scored on a wild pitch from Bandits starter Seth Blair to give the Kernels 2-0.

Quad Cities answered with five runs in the 2nd inning against Kernels starter Brian Diemer as the River Bandits took a 5-2 lead. Chris Edmondson tripled home two runs. Geoff Klein singled home another. Mike O'Neil doubled home the final run in the inning, giving the Bandits a three run advantage. Diemer (8-9) took the loss for the Kernels. He went one inning, allowing five runs on three hits while striking out one and walking three.

The Kernels fought back for two runs in the 2nd inning. Francis Larson scored on a RBI groundout by Jeremy Cruz, and Jean Almanzar scored on a wild pitch by Blair. Blair only went two innings for Quad Cities, allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits. The game stayed 5-4 until the 7th inning when the Bandits plated two runs. RBI hits by Klein and O'Neil extended Quad Cities lead to 7-4. A solo home run by Colin Walsh made the score 8-4.

The Kernels continue the four game series with Quad Cities on Thursday evening at 6:35 p.m. It's a 100.7 The Fox Thirsty Thursday. Bottled soda and water is just $2 all game, and 12 oz. draft beer is just $1.50. Tip the Fox DJ's that are pouring beer at the special stand on the concourse as their tips will be donated to a local charity. Gates open at 5:30 p.m.
