Beloit Sky Carp News Release
BELOIT, WI- The Snappers dug themselves a whole early in Thursday's game as left-hander Sam Spangler made his first start in the Midwest League since being called up from Elizabethton last month. Brian Fletcher hit a mammoth three-run home run to left field to give the Cougars the 3-0 lead. The Snappers would only muster up four runs tonight and committed another two errors to bring their total to ten in the last four games.
Spangler would last only four innings and surrendered six runs (four earned) and struck out two. Michael Tonkin would come into the game in relief and would give up two runs (none earned) in 2 2/3 innings. The Snappers would get as close as 6-4, but two runs in the 7th inning would lock in the win for the Cougars.
Fletcher would lead the way for the Cougars finishing 4-for-5 with two doubles, home run and four RBI, being just a triple short of the cycle. Jake Kuebler (2-for-5) and Geulin Beltre (2-for-4) would be the only other Cougars with multi-hit games. Cole White would pick up the win in relief for Santiago Garrido, who pitched just 4 1/3 innings and surrender four runs on just two hits. They would score three runs in the first and third innings and finished with two runs in the seventh and ninth respectively.
Offensively, the Snappers (17-22) would collect only four hits off Cougar pitching as they struck six times. They've now lost five in a row and 12 out of their last 15 games, yet still find themselves three games out of a playoff spot in the Midwest League Western Division. With the win, Kane County (24-15) trails Quad Cities by only one game for first place. Wang-Wei Lin was the only Snapper to have a multi-hit game as he finished 2-for-4. Daniel Santana, Daniel Ortiz and Derek McCallum would collect RBI.
The Snappers and Cougars will finish up their four-game series tomorrow night at 7:00pm. Tomorrow will be Packers/Bears night at Pohlman Field, fans can dress in their best and most ridiculous Packer or Bear clothes and could walk away with a jersey from their favorite team. After the game will be the 10th fireworks show of the season sponsored by Elliot, Monahan and Associates, Senz Insurance and Sud's O'Hanahan's Irish Pub.
The "Brodie Trophy Player of the Game," goes to Wang-Wei Lin who was the only Snapper to finish with a multi-hit game. He collected to singles in the lead-off spot and raised his season average to .277.
The Beloit Snappers are a member of the Midwest League and a Class-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins. For ticket information, contact the Snappers office at 608-362-2272 or visit the website at www.snappersbaseball.com.
