Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio-Donald Lutz drilled a grand slam home run and drove in six runs to lead the Dayton Dragons to a 10-1 victory over the West Michigan Whitecaps on Thursday night before a crowd of 8,063 at Fifth Third Field. The Dragons (25-14, 60-49) have won two-of-three in the series that will conclude on Friday.
The Dragons broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the fourth inning, keyed by Lutz's two-run single to right with the bases loaded. An error allowed two more runs to score in the inning. West Michigan scored in the sixth on a solo home run by James Robbins to make it 4-1.
The Dragons exploded for six runs in the seventh. Lutz's grand slam home run to right field highlighted the inning. It was the first home run with the bases loaded this season for the Dragons and Lutz's 17th homer of the year.
Dragons starting pitcher Kyle Lotzkar, who was activated from the disabled list earlier in the day, was exceptional. He struck out eight batters over four scoreless innings, allowing two hits and no walks before reaching his pitch limit.
Stalin Gerson (4-1) earned the win for Dayton, working three innings and allowing one run on three hits with two strikeouts. Blaine Howell and Daniel Wolford each pitched a scoreless inning for the Dragons.
Dayton finished with 11 hits. Lutz, Ronald Torreyes, and Frank Pfister each had two.
The Dragons close out the series with the Whitecaps on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field. Daniel Corcino (9-5, 3.41) will start for Dayton. The game will be televised on WHIO Digital Channel 7.2 (Time Warner Cable Channels 23 and 372). Former Reds first baseman Todd Benzinger will provide color commentary on Friday.
Notes: Lutz has enjoyed three huge games in the last two weeks. On July 21, he hit for the cycle against Peoria. Four days later, he belted two home runs in one game against Burlington, and his grand slam on Thursday was the Dragons first since July 9, 2010 when Alex Oliveras homered with the bases loaded at Bowling Green. It was the first grand slam by a Dragon at Fifth Third Field since June 14, 2009 by Byron Wiley.
