Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
The West Virginia Power swept doubleheader with Delmarva Thursday evening at Appalachian Power Park, winning 4-3 in extra innings in game one and 5-1 game two. The two victories extended the Power winning streak to a season-best five games and gave West Virginia its first series sweep of the season.
West Virginia took a 3-0 lead in the second inning of game one. Ramon Cabrera hit his first home run of the season; a two-run shot against Bobby Bundy. Kyle Morgan followed with a solo home run to extend the advantage. Delmarva rallied to tie with two in the fourth and a solo home run in the sixth inning.
In the bottom of the ninth, Morgan walked and stole second. Bengie Gonzalez singled to left and Power manager Gary Green sent Morgan to the plate, beating the throw from Kieron Pope for an extra inning win.
Gabriel Alvarado (3-5) earned the victory in relief of Phillip Irwin, while James Brandhorst (1-7) took the loss. Jose Hernandez had three hits to key the Power in game one.
The nightcap remained scoreless into the bottom of the fifth inning when Evan Chamber tripled in Elevys Gonzalez for a 1-0 lead. The Shorebirds tied the game in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly, but the even score was short-lived. Tom Phelps came on in relief for Delmarva and allowed four runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth inning. Rogelio Moris doubled in the eventual winning run to help West Virginia sweep its first doubleheader of the year. The Power had split each of their four doubleheaders prior to Thursday, always winning the first game and losing the second.
Marc Baca (4-2) picked up the win in game two after blowing a save opportunity, while Phelps (3-2) was charged with the loss. Bengie Gonzalez, Elevys Gonzalez, and Hernandez had two hits each in game two.
West Virginia opens a five game series against the division-leading Lakewood BlueClaws on Friday night at Appalachian Power Park. Lakewood has a five and a half game lead over West Virginia in the division. First pitch Friday is slated for 7:05 pm on Pink Power Night.
