AUGUSTA, Ga. - Nick Liles walked with the bases loaded in the ninth inning to force home the game-winning run in a 2-1 victory for Augusta over Charleston in South Atlantic League action at Lake Olmstead Stadium Thursday evening.
Augusta salvages the finale to split the series and improve to 20-19, 61-48 overall, while the RiverDogs fall to 21-19, 52-57 overall. Charleston still wins the season series against the GreenJackets 14-11, marking the first time that has occurred since 2005.
A 1-1 tie lasted until the bottom of the ninth, when Eliezer Zambrano hit a leadoff single against Francisco Gil (1-3). After a failed sacrifice attempt from Ydwin Villegas for one out, Evan Crawford was hit by a pitch, and Ryan Cavan's reached on an error to load the bags. Liles stepped in and took four straight balls for the walkoff victory.
After losing game one in relief, Hector Correa (4-3) threw a scoreless top of the ninth with two strikeouts to win the finale.
Three hits for the RiverDogs in the first inning against Wilmin Rodriguez resulted in a 1-0 lead, courtesy of Rob Lyerly's RBI single to right.
Rodriguez, who was the winning pitcher in relief on Tuesday, worked a season-high 3.2 innings in a no-decision, giving up just one run on five hits, while walking one and sinking two.
