Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
The West Virginia Power lost 4-3 Sunday afternoon to the Hickory Crawdads at Appalachian Power Park. The Power rallied to tie the game with a three-run seventh inning, but the Crawdads answered with the eventual winning run in the eighth to claim the series opener.
West Virginia starter Jameson Taillon pitched two perfect innings before Hickory got on the board in the top of the third. Alejandro Selen hit the first pitch of the inning over the left field wall for a 1-0 lead. Taillon tossed five innings, allowing two hits and striking out four, and did not factor in the decision.
The Crawdads added two runs off support against the Power bullpen before the West Virginia offense got on track. In the bottom of the seventh, Justin Howard singled and Kawika Emsley-Pai walked to get the Power in position to crack the scoreboard. After a wild pitch, Hickory starter Roman Mendez allowed a single to Elias Diaz that scored both Howard and Emsley-Pai. Jimmy Reyes relieved Mendez and allowed two base hits, including a run-scoring single by Drew Maggi to tie the game at three.
In the top of the eighth, Casey Sadler walked Andrew Clark with two outs and surrendered a double to Christian Villanueva to allow the eventual winning run to score. West Virginia only managed one more base runner over the final two innings and could not rally for a second time.
Sadler (1-3) took the loss after allowing three runs over two innings of work, while Reyes (1-0) picked up the win. Ryan Rodebaugh notched his fifth save with a perfect ninth inning. The Power outhit the Crawdads nine to seven, including two hits apiece for Diaz and Mel Rojas Jr. Selen and Kellin Deglan had two hits for Hickory in the victory.
