Charleston RiverDogs News Release
SAVANNAH, Ga. - Five Charleston errors, including three in the seventh inning, played large in the RiverDogs' 4-3 loss to Savannah in South Atlantic League action at Historic Grayson Stadium Sunday night.
Charleston's Zach Nuding and Savannah's Chase Huchingson locked horns in a great pitcher's duel for three innings, but Nuding ran into two-out trouble in the fourth, as Savannah took a 2-0 lead.
Rafael Fernandez walked, stole second base and took third on an error, while Blake Forsythe followed with another walk. Joe Bonfe drove home his first run of the year with a RBI single, while Albert Cordero did the same one batter later.
The RiverDogs scratched a run in the fifth cutting the score to 2-1 on two straight one-out hits from Jose Toussen and Jose Mojica, with the run scoring on a Huchingson wild pitch with Jeff Farnham batting.
Huchingson worked 5.0 innings for the third straight start, allowing just the one run on five hits while striking out six in a no-decision.
Charleston conjured up some two-out magic in the sixth against reliever Angel Cuan (3-1), courtesy of a double from Kyle Roller and a game-tying RBI single from Rob Segedin to square the affair at 2-2.
Nuding's fourth inning was the only blemish on an otherwise remarkable outing. The 6'4" Texan worked 6.0 innings, permitting just three hits and setting a career-high with 10 strikeouts. Nuding recorded the first six outs of the contest via strikeout and gave up just one hit -- an infield single to Cory Vaughn in the first -- minus the fourth inning.
Savannah scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh versus Charleston reliever Nathan Forer (1-3) in retaking a 4-2 lead. Bonfe led off with a bunt single and moved to second on a throwing error. Following a sacrifice bunt and a line out, Darrell Ceciliani hit a tapper in front of home plate that was mishandled letting Bonfe score for the 3-2 lead. Robbie Shields then singled, and Vaughn reached on his second infield single of the night, with a run scoring on another Charleston throwing error for the 4-2 Sand Gnats advantage.
The RiverDogs offense powered back in the eighth cutting the score to 4-3. J.R. Murphy hit his second double of the game - and league-best 19th of the year - and Segedin got him in, crushing a RBI triple to right-centerfield.
Jose Toussen hit a leadoff single in the ninth inning - his third hit of the game -- but was stranded in scoring position, as Josh Edgin, a native of Florence, S.C. pinned down his eighth save, good for fourth best in the SAL.
Game two of this brief three-game set takes place at a special 12 noon start time on Memorial Day Monday. Right-hander Shane Greene (2-4, 5.04 ERA) toes the slab for the RiverDogs against Savannah right-hander Gonzalez Germen (3-1, 3.50 ERA) in a pitching rematch from May 19 at Riley Park, a contest that Charleston won, 4-3, in 12 innings.
