Hickory Crawdads News Release
CHARLESTON, WV - The Hickory Crawdads beat the West Virginia Power, 4-3, before 2,176 fans at Appalachian Power Park on Sunday evening.
After Hickory RHP Roman Mendez and West Virginia RHP Jameson Taillon alternated two scoreless innings to start the game, the Crawdads (27-22) struck first in the top of the third. On the first pitch of the frame, DH Alejandro Selen belted a solo home run over the left field wall to put Hickory in front, 1-0.
The 'Dads added to the lead with two runs in the top of the seventh against RHP Casey Sadler (L, 1-3). With RF Josh Richmond on at first and two outs, CF Jake Skole kept the inning going with a single, before DH Alejandro Selen was hit by a pitch to load the bases. C Kellin Deglan quickly unloaded the bases, ripping a two-run ground-rule double down the right field line to make it a 3-0 lead.
After Mendez kept the Power off the board through the first six innings, West Virginia (23-25) came racing back with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game. RF Justin Howard led off with a single, quickly followed by a walk from C Kawika Emsley-Pai, putting two on. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and then both came in on a two-run single by DH Elias Diaz to make it just a one-run game. Diaz moved to second on a basehit by 3B Eric Avila, before both advanced on a sacrifice bunt. SS Drew Maggi then drove in Diaz with an RBI single to tie the game, 3-3.
Hickory didn't let the tie last long, moving back in front in the top of the eighth. With two down, 1B Andrew Clark extended the inning with a walk and 3B Christian Villanueva drove him in all the way from first with an RBI double, putting the 'Dads back in front, 4-3.
LHP Jimmy Reyes (W, 1-0), who took over in the seventh, dealt a scoreless eighth and RHP Ryan Rodebaugh (S, 5) slammed the door with a perfect ninth, closing the Crawdads 4-3 win to start the series.
