Kevin Mort drove in the tying run, and Andy Vasquez tripled in the eventual winning run to send West Virginia to a 3-1 series win over Delmarva.
STREAK STOPPED: Matt Curry's hitting streak was snapped at nine straight after going 0-2 with two walks on Saturday. No Power player had hit safely in more than six consecutive games prior to Curry's most recent stretch, where he batted .484 with two home runs and eight runs batted in.
HISTORY VS. HICKORY: West Virginia opens a three game series against Hickory today. The Power and Crawdads will meet 11 times this season after playing seven times all of last year. The Crawdads won the 2010 season set 4-3. The Power lead the all-time set 40-26, and hold a 24-9 advantage at Appalachian Power Park.
BRINGING THE PAYNE: The Pittsburgh Pirates promoted Vincent Payne to the West Virginia roster prior to Saturday's game at Delmarva. The right-hander from Long Beach, California, was drafted in the 12th round last year and pitched for two levels. Payne went 2-2 in the GCL with a 2.43 ERA, and was 0-0 with a 1.80 earned run average while with State College. Pittsburgh transferred Porfirio Lopez to the Spikes NYPL roster. Lopez pitched five relief innings in Friday's 19-inning affair.
HISTORY MADE: Friday night's 19 inning game at Delmarva was the longest in the history of the Power franchise. The 19 inning surpassed the previous marathon of 17 innings, an 8-5 win at Lexington on April 27, 2007. Last night's game last five hours and five minutes, the first game in team history to last over five hours without any type of delay.
LONG GAME RUNNING: West Virginia and Delmarva played 19 innings Friday night after having played a total of 18 during the first two games of that series. Power batters were credited with 64 at bats last night, compared to 66 combined over the first two games. The game was also the longest (innings-wise) this season for any two teams in the South Atlantic League.
FOSTER PROMOTED: The Pirates promoted Zach Foster to the Bradenton Marauders roster on Thursday prior to West Virginia's game at Delmarva. Foster was 1-1 with a 4.91 ERA for the Power this season, and went 6-5 for West Virginia dating back to last season. Pittsburgh added Victor Black to the Power roster to fill the void in the bullpen. Black pitched in two games for the Power last year before spending the remainder of the season in the disabled list, going 0-0 with a 9.64 ERA.
PINPOINT CONTROL: West Virginia pitchers have combined to walk just 98 batters this season, by far the fewest in the league. In fact, Power pitchers have walked the fewest batters in all of professional baseball. No other team in the Minors or Majors is even under 100 free passes issued.
POWER POINTS: Kawika Emsley-Pai's hitting streak was snapped at six game Friday with an 0-6 night. The catcher's on base streak is still in tact at 18 straight after two walks... The Power will make up the May 3 rainout against Greensboro on June 14 at 5:30 pm as part of a doubleheader.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh blanked Chicago 10-0 on the strength of four home runs... Indianapolis edged Pawtucket 9-7... Altoona's beat Binghamton 10-6... Bradenton lost 4-3 at Daytona in walk-off fashion. Aaron Baker and Calvin Anderson hit home runs in the loss.
ON THE AIR: All 140 West Virginia Power games can be heard on ESPN 104.5 FM and 1490 AM in Charleston, WV, across the state on the Power Radio Network, and online at milb.com. Adam Marco will call the action for each of the 70 home games this season, while the home team will provide coverage while the Power are on the road.
