POWER REPLAY: West Virginia lost 3-2 on Tuesday to Delmarva. The Shorebirds took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth, but the Power tied it on a solo home run by Willy Garcia in the home half of the inning. Delmarva regained the lead with a run in the sixth, and again, the Power responded with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth by Gregory Polanco to even the score at two. The 'Birds tallied the final run in the eighth and squelched a bases loaded rally by West Virginia in the bottom of the ninth to secure the win. Zac Fuesser allowed two runs over four innings of relief work and was charged with the loss.
DEEP AND GONE: Willy Garcia's fourth inning home run last night was his first since May 5 at Greensboro. Garcia had gone 23 games between home runs and 86 at bats between long balls. The outfielder now has seven this season after having hit a total of six during the first two years of his professional career.
KING OF SWING: Gregory Polanco leads the Power with nine home runs after Tuesday's game against Delmarva. The club leaders for the entire 2011 season, Matt Curry and Rogelio Noris, each hit nine as well. Curry launched nine over 46 games, while Noris needed 62 games to reach that total (0 home runs over the final 29 games in Noris's 2011 campaign). Polanco is now four long balls away from matching Caleb Gindl and Zealous Wheeler with 13, tenth most in any single season by a Power player.
THE BIRDS: West Virginia holds a 47-46 edge in the all-time series and has gone 30-23 at Appalachian Power Park in the series since2005. The Power and Shorebirds will meet 13 times in the second half of the year, including the only series in Salisbury, MD, from June 29 through July 3.
RETURN OF THE ZACK: Zack Von Rosenberg pitched four innings last night in his first official appearance of 2012. Pittsburgh promoted the right-hander from State College on Monday to the active Power roster. Von Rosenberg allowed one unearned run during his outing on two hits and one walk, striking out one along the way. His next start is slated for the series opener at Lexington on Monday.
THREE STARS HEADED TO ASG: The South Atlantic League announced the 2012 All-Star Game rosters on Tuesday and three Power players were selected, including two starters. Alen Hanson will start at second base despite the fact that he has not played there once this season, while Gregory Polanco was selected to start in right field. Like Hanson, Polanco has not played the position he is starting in at all this season. Matt Benedict was chosen as one of the 11 pitchers to represent the Northern Division team in the game to be played at Joseph P. Riley Jr. park in Charleston, SC, on July 19.
PROMO UPDATE- JUNE 15: West Virginia will hold Pink Power Night on June 15 against the Hagerstown Suns. The team will don pink jerseys that will be auctioned off with proceeds benefiting the Komen for the Cure Foundation.
POWER POINTS: 2012 marks the fourth straight year as a Pirates affiliate that West Virginia has sent multiple players to the SAL All-Star Game... Kirk Singer saw his nine game hitting streak snapped with an 0-2 performance on Tuesday, while Gregory Polanco was able to extend his streak to eight straight with three hits... West Virginia's "Redneck Night" on May 26 was named as the best promotion during the month of May in all of Minor League Baseball earlier today and the team will now have the chance to win the "Golden Bobblehead" Award at the end of the season.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh knocked off Cincinnati 8-4 on Tuesday. A.J. Burnett moved to 5-2 with the victory and Joel Hanrahan earned his 15th save... Indianapolis lost 13-2 at Pawtucket... Altoona beat Reading 1-0 thank to a Miles Durham solo home run in the second inning... Bradenton dropped a 6-5 final at Daytona.
