Lexington Legends News Release

Former major league pitcher Armando Galarraga, best known for losing a perfect game on a blown call with two outs in the ninth inning, will be the starting pitcher for the Lexington Legends Wednesday night at Lakewood.

Galarraga, who signed May 21 with the Legends parent club, the Houston Astros, has not pitched in the majors since May 20, 2011, when he was with the Arizona Diamondbacks. He finished the season with the Diamondbacks triple-A club in Reno and became a free agent. He signed with the Baltimore Orioles in January of 2012, and was released by the Orioles April 6. He is expected to eventually move into the pitching rotation for the Oklahoma City RedHawks, the Astros' triple-A affiliate.

Galarraga broke into the majors in 2007 with Texas, and has appeared in 95 major league games, 84 of them with Detroit from 2008-10. He was 13-7 with the Tigers in 2008. His major league career record is 26-30.

On June 2, 2010, Galarraga, then with the Tigers, was pitching a perfect game against Cleveland at Comerica Park with two outs in the ninth inning when Jason Donald hit a ground ball to first baseman Miguel Cabrera. Cabrera fielded the ball and tossed it to Galarraga, who was covering first base, for what appeared to be the final out, but veteran umpire Jim Joyce ruled Donald safe. Joyce later apologized to Galarraga for making the incorrect call. Both Joyce and Galarraga earned respect for the way they handled the matter, and even collaborated with writer Daniel Paisner on a book titled "Nobody's Perfect: Two Men, One Call, and a Game for Baseball History."

Game time is 7:05 p.m. Wednesday at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood, New Jersey.
