Gumbs Clutch Blast Secures Series Victory

CHARLESTON, SC- Angelo Gumbs hit a long three-run home run to break a 5-5 tie in the seventh inning and lead the Charleston RiverDogs to a 9-5 win over the Hickory Crawdads in South Atlantic League action in front of 4,768 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park Wednesday Night.

The victory was the third in a row for the RiverDogs, as they improved to 36-22 and guaranteed themselves a series victory over the now 31-27 Crawdads.

Both teams put up single runs in the first inning, as Hickory's Luis Sardinas (2-4, run) singled, moved to second and third on wild pitches, then scored on a single by Hanser Alberto (1-5, 2 RBI) to make the score 1-0. In the bottom of the inning, Cito Culver responded with his first home run of the season, clearing the wall in right with a solo shot.

In the second, Dante Bichette, Jr. doubled to lead off and came home with the go ahead run on an error. Kelvin De Leon's sacrifice fly later in the inning gave the RiverDogs a two-run lead after two innings, but they were unable to hold it. Hickory got one run back in the third when Trever Adams led off with a double and scored on a fielders choice. They jumped on top in the fourth thanks to a Kevin Torres RBI single. An error allowed a second run to score and, on a double play, another run made it 5-3.

Charleston soon mounted a comeback, starting in the fifth on a Gary Sanchez sacrifice fly to centerfield that brought the RiverDogs to within a run. They evened things up two innings later after Mason Williams (2-3, 3 runs) doubled to open the inning against reliever Will Lamb (0-5). He scored on a groundout to knot the score at five, but the RiverDogs were far from done. With two outs, an error and a single brought up Gumbs (2-4, HR, 3 RBI, run), who crushed one over the wall in left-center to put his team out in front 8-5. They added an insurance run in the eighth when Williams scored on a wild pitch.

Gumbs' long ball was all Charleston's bullpen would need. Mariel Checo (6-1) pitched two and third innings without allowing a hit or a run to earn his team high sixth win. Philip Wetherell picked up his fifth save of the year with two scoreless innings to finish the night.

BALLPARK FUN: Charlie T. RiverDog was delivered to the ballpark by the ServiceMaster #12 NASCAR showcar, which drove him onto the field during the second inning.

COMING UP: In the final game of this series, Charleston RHP Bryan Mitchell (4-2, 2.40 ERA) and Hickory RHP Luke Jackson (4-4, 4.96) will square off as the RiverDogs go for the sweep. Another Budweiser Thirsty Thursday will have beers in the Ashley View Pub for $1 and the stylings of DJ Natty Heavy.
