CHARLESTON, SC - The Charleston RiverDogs plated four runs in the bottom of the seventh for the come-from-behind win, 9-5, against the Hickory Crawdads before 4,768 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park on Wednesday night.
The Crawdads (31-27) took an early lead with a run in the top of the first inning. With one down, SS Luis Sardinas placed a single to center field. Sardinas worked his way from first to third on two wild pitches from RHP Wilton Rodriguez during 3B Hanser Alberto's at-bat. Alberto then knocked Sardinas in from third base with an RBI single for the early 1-0 lead.
The RiverDogs (36-22), though, tied the game immediately with a solo homer by SS Cito Culver in the bottom of the first, before moving in front with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. 3B Dante Bichette, Jr. doubled against RHP Santo Perez to start the inning. After a ground out to third, Perez uncorked a wild pitch that advanced Bichette to third base. DH Francisco Arcia then worked a walk, before 1B Reymond Nunez reached on a fielding error by 2B Alejandro Selen, scoring Bichette on the grounder. A wild pitch moved Arcia to third and Nunez to second, and then an RBI sacrifice fly by LF Kelvin De Leon put the RiverDogs ahead, 3-1.
Hickory pulled within one run of tying it with an RBI fielder's choice by Alberto in the third, and then leap-frogged the 'Dogs on the scoreboard with a three-run fourth frame. DH Drew Robinson and Selen started the stanza with a single and a walk, respectively, putting two runners on. C Kevin Torres followed with an RBI single to center field, plating Robinson to tie the game, 3-3. 1B Trever Adams drove in Selen with a grounder to third base and reached first base himself on a fielding error by Bichette, before a bunt single by CF Chris Grayson loaded the bases with no outs. Sardinas brought in the inning's final run with a double play ball hit to second, and the 'Dads held a 5-3 lead.
Charleston chipped the Crawdads advantage down to one run in the bottom of the fifth inning. CF Mason Williams led off with a single and took second base on a wild pitch. RF Tyler Austin singled Williams to third base, and C Gary Sanchez plated him with an RBI sacrifice fly to make it 5-4.
The RiverDogs then swung in front with a four-run inning in the bottom of the seventh against LHP Will Lamb (L, 0-5). Williams again sparked the charge with a double and moved to third on a ground out to short. Another ground out to short enabled Williams to charge home, tying the game at 5-5. With two outs and the bases empty, Sanchez reached base on a fielding miscue by Alberto, keeping the inning going for the RiverDogs. After a Bichette single, 2B Angelo Gumbs drove a three-run homer over the left-center field wall, lifting Charleston in front, 8-5.
The RiverDogs added the game's final run in the bottom of the eighth when a wild pitch plated Williams from third, accounting for the 9-5 final score in the Charleston win. RHP Mariel Checo (W, 6-1) tossed 2.1 scoreless relief innings, registering the win for Charleston, before RHP Philip Wetherell (S, 5) logged the save with two scoreless frames.
