LAST NIGHT: West Virginia shutout Hagerstown 7-0. Jason Erickson pitched five scoreless while allowing six hits before handing the game over to the bullpen, which surrendered no hits and just one walk. Offensively, the Power were held without a baserunner until there where two outs in the fifth inning, but plated three runs in the fifth and four in the sixth. Andy Vasquez drove in three, while Ramon Cabrera had three hits to pace the offense.
ONE TOO MANY: The Power loss on Friday night has guaranteed that the club cannot finish the second half or the entire 2010 home schedule with a winning record. The club is now 31-35 in the second half and has an identical home record for the year with three games remaining.
SOLID SEASON REWARDED: Phillip Irwin made his final scheduled start of 2010 in Thursday's win over Rome and was promoted to Bradenton earlier today. Irwin finished his South Atlantic League season 6-3 with a staff best 3.35 ERA in 23 appearances. The Collierville, Tennessee native struck out 111 in 113.0 innings and only walked 20 batters. His 3.35 earned run average ranks sixth in the league, but could finish as high as fifth based on other players innings totals.
ENNIS RETURNS: The Pittsburgh Pirates promoted Justin Ennis back to the Power roster when they sent Phillip Irwin to Bradenton. Ennis was drafted in the 33rd round of the 2010 draft and is the only player drafted this year to appear in a game for West Virginia. The southpaw totaled 19 games for State College during two stints in the NYPL, going 2-2 with a 5.53 ERA. In the SAL this year, Ennis is 0-1 with a 10.13 earned run average.
END OF THE ROAD: West Virginia's recently completed road trip was their final excursion for the 2010 season. The Power went 31-39 away from Charleston this season, hit .244 as a club, and held a staff ERA of 4.63. David Rubinstein led the club with a .317 road average, while Aaron Baker hit 12 of his 18 total home runs on the road. Phillip Irwin excelled on the road, going 3-0 with a 2.05 earned run average, while Kyle McPherson had a staff-best 57 strikeouts away from Appalachian Power Park.
WE ARE FAM-A-LEE: Pittsburgh farm teams have the eighth best winning percentage in Minor League Baseball at .527. St. Louis's minor league clubs have a combined winning percentage of .548 to lead baseball, while Minnesota has the lowest at .433.
WALK THIS WAY: Evan Chambers leads the South Atlantic League with 90 walks and still ranks in the top ten across all of Minor League Baseball despite not having played between August 17 and August 31. Conner Crumbliss of Kane County leads all minor leaguers with 124 walks.
POWER POINTS: Andy Vasquez had his hitting streak snapped at six games with an 0-5 Friday night... West Virginia is 12-16 in daytime contests this season with two remaining afternoon starts left. The Power, conversely, are 51-58 at night... The Power did not place any players on the South Atlantic League's end-of-season All-Star squad.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh lost 9-2 to Washington at PNC Park... Indianapolis beat Louisville 4-1... Altoona whipped Reading 11-2... Bradenton doubled up Charlotte 4-2... State College lost 2-1 Williamsport at Historic Bowman Field.
ON THE AIR: All 140 West Virginia Power games can be heard on ESPN 104.5 FM and 1490 in Charleston, WV, across the state on the Power Radio Network, and online at milb.com. Adam Marco will call the action for each of the 70 home games this season, while the home team will provide coverage while the Power are on the road.
