Hagerstown Suns News Release
The Hagerstown Suns (29-39, 65-73) were shut out at Appalachian Power Park on Saturday night, as the West Virginia Power (32-35, 63-74) scored seven runs late to take Game 2.
Suns RHP Paul Demny (6-10), the eventual tough luck loser, faced the minimum through 4.2 innings, retiring 14 in a row.
In the bottom of the fifth frame, the Power struck for three runs courtesy of an RBI infield single to third base off the bat of LF Andy Vasquez. Demny would then balk for the sixth time this season, as the baseball fell out of Demny's hand as he came set, allowing RF David Rubinstein. An error on a dropped popup to second base by Mills Rogers would summon home Vasquez to give West Virginia a 3-0 lead.
Power RHP Jason Erickson (8-6) was solid through 5.0 scoreless innings. Erickson surrendered six base hits and one walk, and he struck out three.
As the Suns offense was stifled throughout the contest, the Power would pour on four more runs in the bottom half of the sixth stanza.
2B Jarek Cunningham led off with a walk and would come around to score on an RBI single to left field by DH Jose Hernandez. Rubinstein chopped out to shortstop and allowed CF Evan Chambers to touch home, who also received a base-on-balls. Then a Vasquez 2-RBI triple into the alleyway in left center waved in Hernandez and Rubinstein to put the Power on top 7-0.
The Suns only hitting star was 3B Justino Cuevas, who went 3-for-4. Only SS Rick Hague, DH Sandy Leon, and CF Eury Perez had base knocks in the game. Perez gets to .300 for the season with an infield single in the losing effort.
