Ninth Inning Homer Seals Third Straight Win
September 5, 2010 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Salisbury, MD - Jesse Shriner's first home run of the year came at an opportune time for the Augusta GreenJackets. Shriner's blast provided the go-ahead run in the ninth inning of a 3-2 Augusta win over the Delmarva Shorebirds on Sunday evening.
Leading off the ninth, Shriner's drive to left field tucked inside the foul pole for the go-ahead tally. It capped a three-hit game for the GreenJackets designated hitter. The blast came off reliever TR Keating (2-2), who'd retired nine of the ten hitters he'd faced in his three prior innings of work before the ninth.
The GreenJackets took the first lead of the game on a Nick Liles RBI groundout in the fourth. Liles had an infield single in the first to extend his hitting streak to 20 games - the longest current streak in the league and the longest streak this season by a GreenJacket. Chris Dominguez stretched the lead to 2-0 an inning later with his second home run of the series and 20th of the season. Dominguez is now one RBI shy of 100 and two home runs short of tying the franchise single-season record.
Brian Irving was solid for the GreenJackets but hit a rough spot in the sixth. After a two-out error opened the door for the Shorebirds, a walk followed to put two runners on base. Levi Carolus lined a ball toward right-center that changed directions and sliced back to the left in mid-flight, sailing past Skyler Stromsmoe in center and rolling all the way to the wall for a two-run, game-tying triple. Irving departed after six innings, allowing two runs - both unearned - on four hits and three walks with two strikeouts.
Chris Gloor (4-2) threw two scoreless innings of one-hit relief to get the win, striking out three. Chris Wilson fanned two in a 1-2-3 ninth inning to pick up his fourth save of the season.
Andy Reichard (5-1, 3.49) will face Matt Hobgood (3-7, 4.65) in the season finale for both the GreenJackets and the Shorebirds on Monday afternoon as the Jackets look for the series sweep. First pitch from Salisbury, MD will come at 2:05 p.m. with the pregame action beginning at 1:50 p.m. on WRDW AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com .
