Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

LAKEWOOD, NJ - With two-on and two-out in the bottom of the tenth inning, Jose Vargas took a two strike pitch and drove it into left field for a two-run single and the winning hit in a 4-2 extra innings victory for the Kannapolis Intimidators against the Lakewood BlueClaws.

The Intimidators (34-35) led the game 2-1 going into the bottom of the ninth, but the BlueClaws (41-27) tied the game on an unearned run before the game went to extras. Off reliever Justin Beale (1-1), the Intimidators had second and third with two down by virtue of back-to-back walks to Tyler Saladino and Ian Gac and a wild pitch, before Vargas stroked the single to left to score them both and build a 4-2 lead.

Orlando Santos (1-1), who gets credit for his first blown save of the season, instead, earns his first win of the year as he worked around a two-out walk in the tenth to retire the side.

Cameron Bayne started the game for the Intimidators and pitched well in six innings allowing four hits and one run. He will end the season as the league leader in innings pitched and wins in the South Atlantic League. Chase Cooney and Jamaal Hollis pitched clean innings before Santos.

The Intimidators took a 1-0 lead in the first as Daniel Wagner singled to lead off the game, stole second and scored on a double by Jordan Cheatham. In a 1-1 game, they made it 2-1 in the fourth with an RBI-single from Vargas.

The win is the first in extra innings since May 6th when the Intimidators topped the Lexington Legends 8-6 and it gives them an opportunity, with Justin Collop starting to end the second half at .500. The special Labor Day start time is 1:05 and it will be the final game of 2010.
