Lexington Legends News Release
Jake Goebbert had three hits and broke the Lexington Legends season record for RBI as the Legends defeated the Rome Braves 9-3 Sunday afternoon at Applebee's Park.
The Braves took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Barrett Kleinknecht reached second on a throwing error by third baseman Jonathan Meyer and scored on a double by Joe Terdoslavich. The Legends responded with two in the bottom of the first. Grant Hogue led off with a double, went to third on a fly ball to center field by Jiovanni Mier, and came home on a single to center by Goebbert. The RBI was Goebbert's 96th of the year, tying the Legends record set in 2001 by Jon Topolski. Goebbert stole second and came home with the go-ahead run on a single by Kody Hinze.
The Legends broke the game open with five runs in the third inning. Mier was hit by a pitch, and advanced to second on Jimmy Paredes' infield out. Goebbert then broke the RBI record with a double to left center, scoring Mier. Goebbert advanced to third on a wild pitch and Hinze walked before Jonathan Meyer singled to score another run. Barry Butera also walked, and Renzo Tello reached on an error by shortstop Edward Salcedo as Hinze came home to make the score 5-1. After Bubby Williams flied out, Grant Hogue singled up the middle to score Meyer and Butera, giving the Legends a 7-1 lead.
Rome cut the lead to four with two runs in the fifth inning. Jake Hanson led off with a single, but was forced at second on a sacrifice attempt by Bobby Rauh. Kleinknecht popped out to Mier at shortstop, but Terdoslavich and Hefflinger followed with singles, scoring Rauh. Todd Cunningham's base hit drove in Terdoslavich to make the score 7-3.
The Legends added a run in the seventh on an RBI single by Williams and another in the eighth when Hinze singled to drive in Goebbert, who had doubled. It was Hinze's 96th RBI of the season.
Colton Pitkin (3-4), making his second start of the year, worked the first five innings to get the win. Aaron Northcraft (1-3) was the starter and loser for Rome.
The Legends close out the 2010 season Monday night against Rome. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
