MONDAY: West Virginia could not sustain a late rally and dropped the season finale against the Greensboro Grasshoppers by a 5-4 final. Four different Power players drove in runs, but the 'Hopper plated three against Brandon Holden in the second innings and added runs in the sixth and seventh against the Power starter. West Virginia finished the 2010 season set with a 2-7 mark against Greensboro, having won once at home and once on the road.
DUKE THE MARAUDER: The Pittsburgh Pirates promoted Duke Welker to Bradenton earlier today. The right-hander was drafted in the second round of the 2007 draft and had pitched in the South Atlantic League in three straight seasons, including 20 appearances this season. Welker was 1-1 with a 3.63 earned run average this season with a team-best five saves. Welker struck out 25 and walked 24 during his 20 2010 outings.
BULLPEN BOOST: After promoting Welker, the Pirates added Eliecer Navarro to the Power roster. The 22 year-old southpaw was signed by Pittsburgh as an international free agent in 2006 and has pitched in short season ball the last three years. Navarro was placed on the State College roster to begin 2010 and made three appearances for the Spikes since their season began on June 18. The lefty was 1-0 with a 1.04 ERA in those three appearances.
ROLLING ON THE ROAD: David Rubinstein has reached base safely by hit or walk in his last 27 consecutive road contests, dating back to April 25 at Kannapolis, including two hits yesterday. The Power All-Star has also has hit safely in each of his last 12 games and had three hitting streaks of six game or more this season. Rubinstein is batting .377 during this current 12-game run, the second longest hitting streak by a Power player this season.
LOOKING BACK TO LOOK AHEAD: During their first season as a Pirates affiliate, the Power went 27-43 during the first half of the season. The club hit .254 during the first 70 games and held a staff ERA of 4.66. West Virginia finished the '09 campaign with a .262 club average, a staff ERA of 4.18, and a 67-70 record for the year by going 40-27 in the second half. The 2010 edition of the Power hit .235 during the front half of the year, held a staff earned run average of 4.28, and finished 31-39.
LONG TIME GONE: Thursday's loss to Greensboro was the longest game that West Virginia has played in this season. The second half opener lasted three hours and 25 minutes, surpassing the previous marathon of Opening Night at Savannah, which lasted three hours and 16 minutes. The game was the fifth longest ninth inning game in Power history, trailing the longest nine inning contest by 21 minutes, played on August 24, 2007 at Hickory.
IN THE BRIGHT: The Power are 9-13 during day games this season, including a win Sunday afternoon and a loss yesterday. The Power will not play another day game until July 11 and have ten daytime contests remaining, including two pre-noon starts.
POWER POINTS: Evan Chambers has walked 58 times this year to lead the South Atlantic League. Chambers ranks third across all of Minor League Baseball, trailing only Kila Ki'aihue of Omaha (69) and Conner Crumbliss of Kane County (63)...
