Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - After a two-day stretch in which the Augusta GreenJackets pounded out 41 hits in two games, the Charleston RiverDogs limited them to just six as the `Dogs claimed a rain-shortened 4-2 win over the Jackets on Tuesday night.
The rains came in the top of the ninth and never subsided, serving in part to cool what was a red-hot GreenJackets offensive attack coming into the night with 30 runs and seven home runs in their last two games. On Tuesday, all six of Augusta's hits came with two outs and the Jackets never had a leadoff man reach in any inning.
The Jackets got a lead in the second after Tommy Joseph's two-out double. Hector Sanchez's single to right scored Joseph to put Augusta up 1-0 but Sanchez was out when the throw from right was cut off and he was tagged out in a rundown between first and second.
Off GreenJackets starter Chris Heston, Charleston took the lead for good in the fourth. The RiverDogs sent eight to the plate and took advantage of three hits, an error and a hit batsman. Neil Meadchill's two-run triple gave the `Dogs the advantage and Rob Lyerly singled to score Meadchill to push the Charleston lead to two. Meadchill hit a solo home run in his next at-bat in the sixth to put the RiverDogs up 4-1.
Augusta flirted with a rally in the seventh when Sanchez doubled and took third on an error with two outs. Ryan Lollis' first pitch single scored Sanchez to cut Charleston's lead to two. Ydwin Villegas flew out to left to end the inning and the threat.
Heston (2-9) threw the ball much better in his season-high eight innings than his pitching line will indicate. He allowed four runs - three earned - on six hits but didn't walk anyone and struck out eight, also a season-high. In four of his eight innings, Heston retired the side in order while facing the minimum in another two because catcher Tommy Joseph caught a pair of would-be basestealers to end innings in which Heston had only faced three hitters.
Jairo Heredia (3-1) earned his second win of the season against the GreenJackets after firing six innings and allowing a run on three hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. Ryan Flannery struck out two in a scoreless eighth to pick up his eighth save of the year.
Jorge Bucardo (8-2, 1.96) takes the ball for Augusta in the second game of the series on Wednesday and will face lefty Josh Romanski (1-2, 4.33). First pitch will come at 7:05 p.m. with the pregame action beginning at 6:50 p.m. on WRDW AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com.
Fans can purchase seats to all home games by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS while further information can be found online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
