Charleston RiverDogs News Release
AUGUSTA, Ga. - Neil Medchill went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI, as the RiverDogs ended a season-high nine-game losing streak in besting the Augusta GreenJackets, 4-2, in an eight-inning, rain-shortened South Atlantic League game at Lake Olmstead Stadium Tuesday evening.
Charleston improves to 1-5 this half and 32-43 overall, while Augusta ended its four-game winning streak in slipping to 4-2 this half and 45-31 overall.
Augusta assumed a 1-0 lead in the second on a two-out RBI single by Hector Sanchez that came on a 3-0 pitch from Charleston starter Jairo Heredia.
Heredia (3-1) would not allow another run in 6.0 excellent innings, permitting just three base hits with two walks and a season-high-tying seven punchouts.
The RiverDogs broke through for three runs in the fourth inning against Augusta's Chris Heston to snag a 3-1 lead. Medchill drilled a two-RBI into the right-centerfield alley and would score on Rob Lyerly's RBI double to complete the activity.
Medchill clocked his second home run in as many games to left-centerfield in the top of the sixth to up the RiverDogs lead to 4-1.
Augusta notched back-to-back two-out hits against Francisco Gil to cut the deficit to 4-2 in the seventh. Sanchez tripled off the right-field wall, while Ryan Lollis singled him home on the next pitch.
The RiverDogs held onto the 4-2 lead into the ninth when a rain delay halted play 40 for minutes, marking the third straight game that the RiverDogs have experienced a weather delay. However, the umpires deemed the weather situation to be too severe and the game was made final.
Ryan Flannery, who pitched a scoreless eighth, ended up receiving his eighth save of the season.
Heston (2-9) worked a season-best 8.0 innings, allowing all four runs with eight strikeouts, but the former East Carolina standout is now the SAL leader in losses having dropped his fourth straight decision.
J.R. Murphy joined Medchill with two hits and a run scored for Charleston.
Game two is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday, with Charleston sending southpaw Josh Romanski (1-2, 4.33 ERA) to the hill to face Augusta All-Star right-hander Jorge Bucardo (8-2, 1.96 ERA).
